Mel Fairy Godmother Report 11 Aug 2020 13:11

Island I saw our bats last night they swoop over the pond as I think in attracts the flies. Aslo we have a very bright outside light that shines right down the back garden.

Mandy that sounds awful about the girls accident and with a baby in the car too. Have you heard anymore about it please. I would like to know what was ogoing on there beings as I am nosey.

Frank we had home made lasagne last night with a good picking of runners. I did'nt do the garlic bread as the lasagne waas a rather large one and I thought the beans would be better for us.

Vincent is out at his easel again in the blazing sun. I am sitting here in the corner of the kitchen diner at my desk with two fans on.

Mandy hope Max is staying safe in the shade today. Do you give him a bowl of water with ice cubes in? I used to do that when we had dogs in the hot weather and they loved it.

Ann the pictures were really good. I liked the one of the bee in flight and your garden looks just perfect. Those courgettes are more like marrows arn't they. I thought you had grown the patti pan ones again this year.

Better sort something for lunch I suppose. I don't knwo a womans work is never done. ;-)

Picked my sweet peas again this morning and have them on the windowsill above the sink. They smell wonderful and remind me of mum as I used to grow them for her.

Hope Jane is not too hot today and is feeling better. I wonder whne her next lot is? <3 <3

Oh they are so sweet Mel ,the first photo you can still see the fluffy feathers on it .

No no more news on the accident other than she had medical issues ,fits were mentioned ,i don't know if the road is open now it was closed while the house was being boarded up to make it safe .

I have tried putting ice cubes in Max's water bowl but he just stands there barking at them until i take them out :-D

Cloudy here now at times but so so muggy .

Hope you both enjoyed your lunch AnnG did you have some thing nice ?

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 11 Aug 2020 14:23

Have you tried putting a sulpher bock in his water as that cools them down. we used to do that for our dogs.

AnninGlos Report 11 Aug 2020 14:28

We had a very nice lunch Mandy. OH had fish (haddock) and chips and I had scampi. We didn't want a starter or a sweet as it is too hot. Beefeater was really well done. You could only go one way to your table arrows on the floor and hanging from the ceiling and on the revers was a no entry sign. tables really well spaced out and we had a circular table that sits 6 or 8 normally. It felt really safe from start to finish and was pleasantly cool in the air con. (it is 30 degrees here outside.
It sounds as if the heat had caused the poor girl to have a fit or something, maybe she is epileptic (not that we can guess). I hope she is OK today.

Mel the Swallow photos are great, they are so cute. Hope it was not too hot wiping down.

Frank are you sure that your wound is not infected. Can Ros see if it looks OK? If it looks angry you should ring the surgery.

Island. Ah I see what you mean now. What will you do if you can't find a pattern?

SuffolkVera Report 11 Aug 2020 15:14

I’ve just done a long post, pressed submit and it has disappeared for no reason that I can see and I can’t get it back. I can’t do it all again - it’s too hot. I have read all the posts and seen the pictures that have been emailed and I’ll probably be back tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of your day and stay cool.

Island Report 11 Aug 2020 16:23

Melting, so I've come back indoors for a cuppa.

AnnG. I gave up looking for a pattern online and have gone back to excel and maths.
I'll get there.

Mel, I love wildlife but like it to stay outside - my fella spotted a big black slug on the living room carpet late one night :-0 ugh! He thought the dog had disgraced himself - until it moved.
Lovely pics of the swallows, did you get to see them as tiny balls of fluff? I haven't spotted swallows here but we do get swifts screaming up the road.
I wonder if the bats will find our pond? might not be ideal for a smooth swoop and take off unless they can do sharp u-turns.

I've tried taking some photos in the garden but as the camera is alien to me I'm not having a great deal of success. I may go back to my old one and arrange the shots to conceal a smudge which shows on all my pics.

I'll stay indoors now until later and do some more of my sewing 'to do' list

Jane Report 11 Aug 2020 18:00

Afternoon All
Golly it is almost too much of an effort to type. This heat this afternoon is relentless .I see we are all suffering from itWe are getting a bit snappy with eachother too.
I didn’t see my friend after all yesterday as we have been given new advice about not meeting up indoors with others and it was too hot for outside.
The coolest place yesterday was in the mobile scanner unit.It was lovely but the staff in it were cold.

I loved the baby Swallows Mel.We saw a group of young ones land in the top of our big fir tree the other day. They didn’t stay long before taking off again and haven’t been seen since.

Is it tonight we have a comet? They sky is so clear it would be so nice to see some shooting stars.

How’s OHs painful mouth today Gill? And your OHs sinusitis Anng?

Frank I’m sure that once those stitches are out on Thursday you will feel so much more comfortable.

Mandy what a dreadful accident!!! My first thought too was that the lady had either had a hypo or some other kind of medical emergency.Do you know if the baby was hurt?
Funny old Max barking at the ice cubes :-D

Ann your garden is looking lovely .I can see what you mean about the slate being so heavy. You have done a lovely job.

Nothing from Fg for a while? Unless I have missed any posts

James has gone to buy more ice cubes .We seem to be getting through bags of them. Hope they haven’t all sold out.

Vera how annoying to lose your post.I wonder where that one went.

Well I don’t know what to do with myself. There just seems no way of getting cool even with the fans on.Chris is cooking for himself and James.Rather him than me .I ate at lunchtime so will just have something light .I bought some cottage cheese with pineapple in M&S so might just have that with a couple of crackers.I can’t remember the last time I ate cottage cheese.

Let’s hope all our fans keep working for the rest of this week!!!! There won’t be any to buy in the shops now.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 11 Aug 2020 18:23

Jane I bought cottage cheese from Asda one week but did'nt like their version. I used to love Morrisons cottage cheese with pineapple on a salad.

Jane why don't you go and have a cool bath, just lay in the cold water for a while and it soon cools you down.

I slept from when I said I was going to join Oh till 5.27pm when I came out and looked at the clock. I have watered the beans as its much cooler out there now.

Easy dinner tonight either pizza or quiche and I am putting my m oney on the quiche as no oven on for that.

Oh got himself so hot at lunchtime he had two glasses of ice cold tonic water and two goosberry yoghurts. He's outsife at his sunflowers now.

Island oh's pond is the size of a small swimming pool and thats the one the bats fly over. Mine is all covered in netting since we had a visit from the otter who seemed to be obsessed with eating only the heads of my fish and leaving their bodies around the garden to clear up. I have just been and looked in my pond again and seen a different fish to the two I saw laying eggs the other night. This one was between a plant basket and the side of the pond and it was all orange so that shud be three I have left in there. I dropped four pellets down by it but it did'nt touch them and then after a whie it must have spied me and swam away down to the bottom of the pond and out of sight.

Why is it men know where to find things use them and leave them where they used them and not put them away? I looked everywhere for the battery charger pack to take my cd player with me yesterday as it won't turn itself off now, so I could listen to it while oh was in the docs. Yesterday evening after searching everywhere for it I tol dhim I could'nt find it and he said he had had it to charge his phone up. This morning it has appeared on my desk minus its lead!!!

Frank

Frank Report 11 Aug 2020 18:39

Evening all. PHEW it's very hot even now, with two fans going and doors and windows wide open.

Ros has just gone in the kitchen to start the evening meal, STIR FRY. I've told her, NOT TOO MUCH for me, it's to hot to eat, plus when she came home, she bought me a tray of sushi , that was gorgeous, but quite filling.

Still waiting for CARE AND REPAIR to contact me over the steps and drive. I suppose I will have to chase them up tomorrow.

Speak again in the morning. STAY COOL. !!!! ;-) ;-) ;-)

Annx

Annx Report 11 Aug 2020 20:05

Evening All,

I seem to have got behind with the posts so will do my best. :-)

What a nasty accident Mandy. My first thought was she must have been texting or something, but it does sound like she was taken ill poor thing. A bit of a shock for the people whose house was hit too. Poor old Max didn't like the look of the ice cubes did he!! At least with them melted he would get a cool drink.

I have grown 2 Patty Pan ones as well Mel. They are those chinese seeds so I shan't grow anymore of those. They had a long delivery date so I got these as well as they came quickly. I should be picking them smaller, but they grow so fast!! I must see if I have any seeds left with the name on them.

We managed to be up early and went to 2 garden centres this morning. You pay outside under a canopy at the first so we didn't even have to go inside that one. Not surprising there is little selection so I think the flower bed will be very pink! Sandra would like it!! :-D There was no-one else at the first garden centre and only a few at the other so that was good. They left a table with cloths and spray to wipe your own trolley at the second garden centre but nothing at the first. I did get some million bells for the front wall pots and some seeds too.

Jane I like black and white dresses so I bet I would like your sundress. I like cottage cheese from some places but not others and like mine with a jacket potato.

I did do most of the moving of the rocks Island. Men have a way of vanishing out of earshot when you want some help! Getting them level meant a lot of lifting on and off again. Our garden doesn't look so neat close up as we still get quite a few weeds. OH daren't pull them up till I've checked they aren't flowers! Last year he pulled up all of my pretty violet Verbascum seedlings I'd been nurturing and I only have 2 plants left now. The fences need cleaning/painting too and we are in the middle of changing a few things so not so neat behind the scenes so to speak!

I have had a fan on today as this afternoon has been really hot. It was misty and cool first thing but the thermometer in here has been showing 28 degrees. We both had a lay down this afternoon and OH has been filling a bottle of water to cool in the fridge.

I hope your stitches aren't bothering you too much Frank. Not long till Thursday now when you can say goodbye to them. Good idea to contact the man about your steps and drive as you need them doing sooner rather than later.

I hope your OH's sinusitis is less painful now AnnG and that Gill's hubby's toothache let him sleep last night. OH has felt a bit 'off' today. His legs are covered in the rash from a bit of sun exposure again, so I think that is why. It seems to happen even if he sits in the shade, so it's long trousers from now on which is a bit much in this heat!

Sorry you lost a post Vera. It does make you want to give up trying again, especially in this heat. I meant to say that you can buy that particular Gaura variety online.

I have been writing up a few notes from the last online photography session I did as the next free one is on Thursday and he is carrying on from where we left off and I had forgotten some things already.

Lorks oh lummie it's been too hot to stay sane :-0

I've just had a quick read but too befuffled to post.

except - Jane, it's the Perseid meteor shower ar it's peak tonight.

Gillx

Gillx Report 11 Aug 2020 22:03

I was just about to sign out and realised I hadn't been on here today, I thought I had........silly me :-S :-S

Just to let you all know OH went back to the dentist yesterday and apparently he had a bit of food in his gum where he'd had a tooth out and it had started to heal over, so the dentist has opened it up and give it a good clean, plus give him some more antibiotics as the abscess he had in another part of his mouth hasn't quite cleared up. He said it's feel much better today, so that's good.

Sorry I haven't read any posts, I hope you are all okay.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 11 Aug 2020 22:09

I never seem to remember thing lately Ann. Poor G with the rash as they are not nice at all.

I have about 7 midgey bites in various areas on my body now and they itch like anything in this heat. Two on my left arm and three on the side of my left boob and two on the indife os my left leg at the top. Still have a lump on my neck from the horse fly bite but its not as bad as it was.

Jane I want to see this new sundress pease? It sounds nice. Are you stil wearing those two you bought last year? The straight ones with pockets?

I had a nice salad tonight with an egg and two slices of bread and butter and oh ate the whole pizza himself.

No Gill I hope she is ok and G has some relief from his gum boil and more antibiotics.

How to watch Perseids meteor shower in UK tonight
If you find yourself struggling to sleep tonight, you could catch a glimpse of a stunning meteor shower if you head outside.

Tuesday 11 August 2020 22:30, UK

One of the best meteor showers of the year will peak tonight, offering stargazers in the northern hemisphere a chance to see dozens of very fast and bright meteors.

If you find yourself struggling to sleep tonight, seek comfort in the fact you could catch a glimpse of the stunning Perseid shower, especially between about 2am and dawn.

If skies are clear it will be visible across much of the country from around midnight until 5.30am tomorrow, and although the moon rises around midnight too - which will affect the peak viewing window - there will be still be nearly one meteor every two minutes during that peak.

The weather forecast where you are
The weather forecast where you are

Even though each meteor is mostly no bigger than a grain of sand, they still produce an eye-catching shooting stream of light in the sky as they burn up upon hitting the atmosphere at about 130,000 mph.

They are produced each year when the Earth ploughs through dusty debris left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle, and can reach scorching temperatures of between 1,648C (2,998.4F) and 5,537C (9,998.6F).

Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) has compiled a guide for those hoping to take part in some stargazing, with the timing of the shower perfect for youngsters who may be allowed to stay up late as it is during their summer break.

Some top tips include:

Keep your eyes off your phone - giving your eyes time to adjust to the dark will help you catch a glimpse of some of the fainter meteors.
Do not rely on binoculars - they will restrict the size of the sky that will be visible to you, as will telescopes.

RMG describes the Perseid shower - named because the meteors appear to dart out of the Perseus constellation, after the hero of Greek myths - as "simply one of the best meteor showers of the year".

According to NASA, the Perseids are among the most plentiful meteor showers that humans can observe, with 50-100 meteors seen per hour.
The Perseid meteor show occurs every August in the UK.

They are also known for their fireballs - larger explosions of light and colour that can persist longer than an average meteor streak.

NASA explains: "This is due to the fact that fireballs originate from larger particles of cometary material."

They are also brighter than even the brightest stars visible in the northern hemisphere - and will provide an amazing show if you are up to see them.

Morning all,

Cloudy here but bright and very hot. Slept like a log even though it was hot but did get up once for the loo.

Stayed up till 2.06am but did'nt see anything as I think the sky was cloudy because I could only see a few stars here and there.
