Susan,

I am still looking for Mary!

This is the only one I can find with a father John and there is a Chistina McLean living with the family and the father is dead by 1871 but the mother isn't Helen:

1861 Scotland Census
about Mary Weir
Name: Mary Weir
Age: 22
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1839
Relationship: Daughter
Father's Name: John Weir
Mother's Name: Ann Weir
Gender: Female
Where born: Kilmun, Argyllshire
Registration Number: 510
Registration district: Dunoon and Kilmun
Civil parish: Kilmun
County: Argyll
Address: 14 Clachaig
Occupation: Domestic Servant
ED: 8
Household schedule number: 16
Line: 22
Roll: CSSCT1861_70
Household Members: Name Age
John Weir 65
Ann Weir 64
Mary Weir 22
Peter Weir 18
Christina Weir 31 -
Christina McLean 9
Ann McLean 6
John McLean 3

So, this is what we have:

Alexandrina born to Mary Weir in 1876, father unknown (but given George's first name (from Mary Ann's birth cert) likely to be Alexander George Anderson)

Mary had previously been married to James Campbell who died in 1871.

I have looked at James death registration, and he died of smallpox.

No marriage showing for Mary to George Anderson so for some reason they left Scotland and moved to London.

Thank you very much Potty you explained it so well for me because I was just getting so confused with it, thought it would be a simpler than it has turned out to be, but your last post has simplified it for me!!! I am just intruiged why they left Scotland and moved to London??????

Kind regards

Susan

Potty,

Going back to James Campbell and Mary Weir's marriage certificate.

Could Mary's mother's name be ... Turner ? Maybe you could have another look to check.

Possible marriage from the IGI:
John Weir and Anne Turner
3rd March 1823 ... Dunoon and Kilmun, Argyll, Scotland

John's father's name ... Duncan Weir
(could Mary's son, Duncan Campbell be named after his grandfather ?)

The only obstacle being ... Mary says her mother's name was Helen.

But then again, I've seen many weird and wonderful mistakes given on certificates ... given by informants who you imagine should have known better.

I have had another look at James and Mary's marriage - yes it could be Turner. James's mother was also Helen so I suppose it is possible that a mistake was made with Mary's mother and both mothers were put down as Helen.

familysearch has baptisms for children of John and Anne - but not Mary's.

This is the family i 1851 - can't find them in 1841:

1851 Scotland Census

Roll: CSSCT1851_109

Potty,

The marriage info you checked for the name Turner looks promising. So does the 1851 census you posted.

Wonder where Mary Weir was at the time of the 1861 census prior to her marriage.

As mentioned, here are the children of John and Anne Weir. Looks like their last three children ... Mary, Peter and Duncan were either not baptised or the records are missing.

Parents: John Weir and Anne Turner
All at Dunoon and Kilmun, Argyll, Scotland

Janet Stewart Weir
Birth: 13 December 1823
Christening: 18 January 1824

Duncan Weir
Birth: 20 August 1825
Christening: 19 February 1826

Catharine Weir
Birth: 1 November 1827
Christening: 16 November 1828

Christian Weir
Birth: 20 March 1829
Christening: 28 November 1850

Donald Weir
Birth: 15 July 1831
Christening: 4 April 1850

Anne Weir
Birth: 12 August 1834
Christening: 28 November 1850

Big gap years between the births and christenings for Christian, Donald and Anne.

I have posted the 1861 above - Mary was still with her parents. Christian (or Christina) married John McLean on 3rd Jan 1851 (submitted record on IGI, confirmed on scotlandspeople), so maybe she had to be baptised before she could be married?
