Potty Report 6 Apr 2011 14:30

Hi Susan

That birth reg is a bit confusing and really doesn't get us any further!

I am not sure if it means that Mary Campbell is Mary Weir's mother or if she is Alexandrina's mother! On all the birth registrations that I have looked at it is the relationship of the informant to the child that is given. If that is so on this one, it would seem that Mary Weir has married a Campbell and then had a child by another man.

I cannot find a death for Alexandrina Mary Weir b1876 in Scotland neither can I find her on the 1881 census; also there are no marriages in Scotland. So, she could be your Alexandrina.

I have also looked at 49 Richard Street in the 1871 and 1881 but no Weirs, Campbells or Andersons living there then.

I think we have reached a brick wall with this Susan. There are too many George and Alexander Andersons to pick out the right one.

I will post a new thread on this board to see if anyone with more knowledge of Scottish birth regs has any thoughts about Alexandrina's and I am still looking for George (trying to find one who disappears from the Scottish census after1871).

Susan Report 6 Apr 2011 15:10

Hi Potty Yes I think you could be right Potty a brick wall???? Someone sent me some info for an Alexandrina Hyatt died Sept 1939 in Camberwell London I think this could be my Alexandrina as she married a William Hyatt. I must admit I am very confused with it all to be honest I thought that when I purchased the birth cert and found Marys maiden name it would be a little bit simpler than its actually been.

Thank you very much Potty for all the time and trouble you have shown me in tring to locate The Andersons!!!!
And thank you for still trying the find my elusive George.

Chat soon

Kind regards

Susan

Potty Report 6 Apr 2011 15:19

Sorry, Susan, no luck with George (or Alexander!). I can only find one George (or Alexander) Anderson of the right age in 1871 who had an occupation anything like George's but he is still in Scotland with his wife in 1881.

I am pretty sure that birth is your Alexandrina's - mother's maiden name is correct and she could be named for her father but, sadly, no way of proving it.

rootgatherer Report 6 Apr 2011 15:25

If the informant was Mary Campbell on Alexandrina's birth certificate it should say the relationship to the child. That would be normally be done on Scottish birth registrations.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 6 Apr 2011 15:27

Sorry, I should also have said that if both those birth registrations refer to the same child then one was made in the area of her birth and the other in the area of her mother's usual residence.

Potty Report 6 Apr 2011 15:43

Hi rootgather,

Susan has said that it says "mother" for the informant, Mary Campbell, so Mary Campbell and Mary Weir are the same person?

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 6 Apr 2011 15:45

Had a look at the image on SP. What the certificate says
Alexnadrina Mary Weir (Campbell) was born at 11hr. 30m. PM on Fourth June 1876 at 49 Richard Street, Glasgow. (No father named) Mother Mary Weir, Domestic Servant, widow of James Campbell, Iron Works Carter who died on 15th. December 1871 (Domicil: 49 Whitevale Street, Glasgow) The informant was Mary Campbell, Mother. The birth was registered on 22nd. June 1876 at Glasgow by John Hamilton, Registrar.

So it looks to me that Mary was living at Whitevale Street (Camlachie Reg. District) although her child was born at Richard Street (Anderston Reg. District) The image that I looked at was the Anderston District one and there is RCE (register of corrected enties) note on it. These are often added if there has been proof of paternity provided at a later date.

EDIt
Sorry that should have said NO RCE on the certificate.

Sorry, Potty. I was looking up that census when you posted it!

I have to go now but will look back later if I can.

PS Wouldn't be too worried about the age but I would look at James's death certificate and that marriage anyway.

Helen

Helen Report 6 Apr 2011 22:27

Just wondering what happened to Mary and James Campbell's two other children after Mary moved down to England. They don't show up on the 1881 census there.

JOHN CAMPBELL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 21 NOV 1867 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
DUNCAN CAMPBELL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 25 MAY 1870 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Might be worth looking for them back in Scotland in 1881 ... see who they were living with.

Might shed some light on the wider family ... helping to confirm connections.

Just in case ... there is a death for a Duncan Campbell in 1871 in the Milton district of Glasgow. This Duncan was born in 1870 +/- 1yr.

Susan Report 7 Apr 2011 07:53

Hello Helen thanks very much I know its a mystery because in the 1881 Census in England when she is picked up again she is 43 but as u said she only had Alexandrina?? aged 4 and mary aged 2 BUT what happened to everybody else????why would she take presumably just alexandrina and NOT the other children?? it also shows that she was married to george BUT doesnt say in Census how long she had been married for??

Really struggling because being new to it not sure what to do next just ??

Kind regards
