As a ex-smoker I don't mind smoking in public places as long as cigarette ends do not litter the streets and make them look dirty! There should be specific bins lining the streets to dispose of them in a sensible way and slightly fragranced too so the waft isn't in the air! Another thing is walking behind someone and getting the smoke waft in my face it honestly takes my breathe away and I continue to hold it until I have passed that person as silly as it sounds! Good topic with probably lots of heated dicussion to come!!....lol Susie x

Why is it neccessary for people to use foul language and /or foul expressions to state their opinions (but only when that opinion differs from yours ) ? We are all entitled to our point of view and quite frankly I dont mind people smoking in open spaces if they want to,consider it signed Paul ! Maddy

My hubby smoked for about 40 years but, thankfully gave up 10 years ago. But every time he gets a cold or flu symptoms, like he has just now, he has a really bad time. Every breath is a struggle and it's an awful thing to witness. So no, I would not sign anything which encourages people to carry on doing harm to themselves - in public places or anywhere else.

Paul, I'm not a smoker and never have been, it's fine by me if you want to smoke in open spaces & where ever it's permitted. Heather :)

Smoked half a cigarette in 1940, but none since. I am on your side basically , with reservations where eating places are concerned., and places without extractor fans Think it almost amounts to a crusade with some people to get it banned completely. There is a time and place for everything. Happy days

I'LL SIGN - but why did all those others come in and say no - it's normal to ignore a petition you don't agree with, not sign and say no!!!

I'll sign, and I'm a non smoker. I don't like smoking in cafes etc, but in the street?? If they are so upset by smokers, why do they sell the bloomin things? And, I never laughed at Orwell....and you are right, it is getting worse! Deanna X

Roxanne Report 13 Feb 2006 12:00

changed my mind paul, I will sign, the reasons are as follows, these are the things that should be banned first. 1, gas gusslers, everyone should down size their cars. 2, school runs should be banned, school buses should be made available to all. 3,only journeys over a certain mileage should be allowed in cars, any others should be by public transport. when all these have been introduced then I will sign for a ban on smoking. I think its safe to say these things are a long way off. if you live in a city full of non smokers, you are far more likely to get breathing problems than someone who lives in the country with all smokers, thats a fact. Roxanne:-))

I do think that smokers are more tolerant of other people than non-smokers.

Harold, I agree with you there, it is our right, if every-one stopped smoking then the gov't would hit the motorist's off the roads, then all the alchohol, so what's left to tax?, there isn't anything left to hit us with that could bring in such a vast revenue. Trish, I find that to be true aswell. Micheal.

I'll sign!!! Its my right to be able to smoke......the government get plenty of revenue from my stupidity in smoking dont they??? so why does anyone think I shouldnt light up somewhere if I want a ciggie!! I'm a considerate smoker -I wont smoke around my friends who dont smoke (and that includes in my own home where i'm perfectly entitled to do so!) I wouldnt light up if someone was eating beside or around me.....However if I happen to be standing at a bus stop or out walking and the mood takes me to light up then I flaming well will!! I'm also sick of hearing that smoking is to blame for everything. Off to have a ciggie now!! J x
