Selena in South East London Report 13 Feb 2006 20:03

I am a nicotine addict. Has anyone ever tried to make smoking illegal? If it were against the law to buy them or bring them into the country or have them in your possession? I just wonder why this hasn't happened. Selena

I'll sign even though I packed up last March. I still think people have the right to smoke in open places. Hilary.

Jacqui Report 13 Feb 2006 16:45

I've signed!!! I am as entitled to light a ciggie if I want to, in an appropriate place, as and when I want to. I will endeavour not to blow my smoke over others, and assume that non-smokers will not approach me and accuse me of infecting their space. I will put the fag end in the appropriate bin (unlike 99% of Macdonald users!) I will not dream of entering a non-smoking section of a restaurant and lighting up a ciggie, nor will I light up in a restaurant generally even if seated in the smokers poxy corner! I will buy my fags, spend my own very hard earned dosh the way I want to - albeit on 200 a week! - I earn it - I spend it - how I want to, and those who profit by my tax can continue to do so - their children can be educated, benefits paid, hospitals staffed etc etc etc I will not wander off to the quack with every little ache and pain to find the surgery full of malingers with all sorts of ailments and none- smoking related illnesses. I will keep my cough to myself! Jacqui

Hi Danger Mouse, can't think of anything more dangerous than denying a truck driver a ciggy when he's in charge of that massive lorry. Drivers have a hard enough time as it is on the roads without that!!

I hate cigarette smoke. Hubby always used to go outside to smoke and of the friends I have who smoke all of them have always taken their ciggies outside. Don't really have a problem with it outside so long as it doesn't blow in my face or on my hair and clothes and I don't have to sit or stand next to someone reeking of fags. Daisy

I'll sign!!! Its my right to be able to smoke......the government get plenty of revenue from my stupidity in smoking dont they??? so why does anyone think I shouldnt light up somewhere if I want a ciggie!! I'm a considerate smoker -I wont smoke around my friends who dont smoke (and that includes in my own home where i'm perfectly entitled to do so!) I wouldnt light up if someone was eating beside or around me.....However if I happen to be standing at a bus stop or out walking and the mood takes me to light up then I flaming well will!! I'm also sick of hearing that smoking is to blame for everything. Off to have a ciggie now!! J x

Harold, I agree with you there, it is our right, if every-one stopped smoking then the gov't would hit the motorist's off the roads, then all the alchohol, so what's left to tax?, there isn't anything left to hit us with that could bring in such a vast revenue. Trish, I find that to be true aswell. Micheal.

Trish Report 13 Feb 2006 13:58

I do think that smokers are more tolerant of other people than non-smokers.

Roxanne Report 13 Feb 2006 12:00

changed my mind paul, I will sign, the reasons are as follows, these are the things that should be banned first. 1, gas gusslers, everyone should down size their cars. 2, school runs should be banned, school buses should be made available to all. 3,only journeys over a certain mileage should be allowed in cars, any others should be by public transport. when all these have been introduced then I will sign for a ban on smoking. I think its safe to say these things are a long way off. if you live in a city full of non smokers, you are far more likely to get breathing problems than someone who lives in the country with all smokers, thats a fact. Roxanne:-))

Deanna Report 13 Feb 2006 11:55

I'll sign, and I'm a non smoker. I don't like smoking in cafes etc, but in the street?? If they are so upset by smokers, why do they sell the bloomin things? And, I never laughed at Orwell....and you are right, it is getting worse! Deanna X

I'LL SIGN - but why did all those others come in and say no - it's normal to ignore a petition you don't agree with, not sign and say no!!!

Smoked half a cigarette in 1940, but none since. I am on your side basically , with reservations where eating places are concerned., and places without extractor fans Think it almost amounts to a crusade with some people to get it banned completely. There is a time and place for everything. Happy days
