Daughter held captive for 24yrs by her father in a basement cellar, she has apparently had 6 or 7 kids by him. It's unbelieveable.

Police in Austria are trying to establish how a father was able to lock his daughter in a cellar for almost 24 years and force her to bear him seven children.

some of the children were imprisoned with their mother. Others lived a relatively normal life above ground with the man who is their father AND grandfather, 73-year-old Josef Fritzl.

Police say Elisabeth Fritzl, now aged 42, had been missing since August 29, 1984.

She has told them she was drugged and handcuffed and imprisoned in the basement of a house in the town of Amstetten.

Authorities got access to the area, comprising a narrow hallway and several rooms, after Mr Fritzl told them how to unlock a hidden door using a code only he had known.

according to the report I get the impression some of the kids were dumped on the doorstep with a note, giving the impression the daughter had dumped them, cos she couldn't take care of them. So the mother and the father took them in. they were raised normally whilst a few the eldest 2 and youngest were locked away and it was only when the eldest a 19yr old became very ill she was allowed to go to hospital.

what I don't get is how they lived in the basement and yet her mother didn't hear a thing!! How on earth can she give birth to 7 kids and not be heard? Plus babies cry etc etc.

He has now admitted it - according to police !! Do you think he had enough & wanted to be found out?

Rosi Glow Report 28 Apr 2008 16:10

Some of the children had never seen daylight before...Thats mindblowing.

How could his wife not hear nothing for 24 years?

Catherine from Manchester

Catherine from Manchester Report 28 Apr 2008 16:18

the reason he was apparently found out is one of the children the eldest was very sick and taken to hospital and the authorities pleaded with the community and other countries for the mother to come forward cos they could not find out why they was sick. then it's all come out. bit conflicting reports, mainly due to the translations I think.

I think I heard on the news that a letter from the childs mother was found in the childs pocket when he was admitted to hospital..

Rosi Glow, I heard that too. Some of the children were allowed to live a 'normal' life, some not, that was such an unfair decision he made. The doctors don't think the eldest girl, now in hospital, will ever be fully well again.
The mother managed to sneak a note into the girl's pocket before she went to hospital, asking for help. Thank God it was found by the right people.
I am glad the father is admitting his wrongdoing - it will make things a bit easier to uncover the full details.

I read this in the paper, totally stunned, this is just sick
the mother/girl was only 19, her dad took into the basement and locked her in there, she had 7 children by him and 1didnt live (well i wont repeat on here its just too sick to say)..... but 6 are left, 3 eldest were told to the community that they were dumped by mother.. and the other 3 lived with her in a padded cell... when the eldest girl collapsed and went to hospital and still in a coma thats how they found out about the 24 years of abuse... the papers did seem to mention the mother new all along what was happening to her daughter from her husband ....
i hope they throw away the key, just sick it is,
