Andrea Report 16 Oct 2007 11:22

Hi, can anybody help me? I'm fairly new to all this so please bear with me.

I have been following my dad's line backwards, I have got as far as George Neve (my great great grandad) but now I'm stuck!

I was quite pleased with myself for finding census records for George Neve in 1901, 1891, 1881 and 1871. These all show him living in (Gt) Yarmouth, Norfolk with his wife Ann (until 1891, then a widower) and children including William Neve who I know is my great grandfather.

These census records are all pretty consistant and fit with what I know. His place of birth is shown as Stalham, Norfolk on each with an EYB of 1834-1837.

Unfortunately, it all goes wrong from here! I cannot find an 1861 census (he should have been about 27 and already been married to Ann with one daughter Alice).

I cannot find an 1851 census - should be 17 - possibly unmarried, maybe with parents?

I cannot find any birth records for a George Neve born in 1834 (+/-) 5 years in Stalham, Norfolk.

I have found a possible marrige record - A George Neve marriage registered in Oct/Nov/Dec 1851 in Aylsham, Norfolk (which would fit because wife Ann was born in Aylsham?)

I can't find any death records that appear to fit (must be after 1901).

I can send for the marriage certificate to see if that helps but does anyone have any other ideas?

Sorry for the long post.

Well there isnt a lot online for Norfolk pre 1837 as they refused to hand over the church records to the Mormons (familysearch.org - IGI). Remember that registration wasnt compulsory until 1875.

There are quite a few areas of Norfolk missing in the 1861 census - it will tell you which on ancestry if you go to 1861 and then read about it.

What was his occupation? Do you have the sons birth cert for mums maiden name?

Ill bump up a thread for links for Norfolk records online.

These are the names listed for the 1851 marriage page.

Marriages Dec 1851

Bircham Henry ...Aylesham 13 3
Chamberlain Ann ...Aylesham 13 3
Frost Elizabeth ..Aylesham 13 3
Huggins Maria ...Aylsham 13 3
Kiddle Mary ...Aylsham 13 3
Neve George ...Aylesham 13 3
Poll William ...Aylesham 13 3
Rivett William ...Aylesham 13 3

Maybe finding Ann CHAMBERLAIN in the 1851 census will help you to decide if she's a possible wife, if her details match Ann, the wife.

Looks like the 1851 marriage is the one with Ann the daughter 1852 being first child.

Thanks guys - you're so quick!

I have Brewer's Labourer for George's ocupation and I don't have any of the children's birth certificates yet. I will send for William's which I think I have found registered Apr/May/June 1873 Yarmouth.

Heather - where do you get baptism records from? That looks a good possibility.

Thanks for the Chamberlain link, I'll look into that now!

Thanks for all help!

I'm probably being thick (but I am new so be gentle!). Where are you looking up parish records?

Heather

Heather Report 16 Oct 2007 11:45

freereg - brilliant site, quite new but adding 250000 records a month - any one want to volunteer to help transcribe??

Then there is (for Norfolk) Norfolk transcription archive. Again, wonderful site but no longer being updated.

IGI on familysearch is good for pre 1837 but very little for Norfolk.

Andrea

Andrea Report 16 Oct 2007 11:48

Another confusing thing I forgot to mention. I think there must have been two son William's. On the 1871 census it shows a William H Neve aged 9. This is too old for my William who wasn't born until c1873 and was a William Samuel James.
I supose William 1 may have died and next son also called William?

Heather

Heather Report 16 Oct 2007 11:49

Oh, dont forget to try variations of the names on all sites, e.g. Neave

The boy baptsied in Aylsham William Henry may be the first boy then and he and Ann died? You can go to freebmd and check for deaths. If your William was born Yarmouth then they must have moved at some time as Stalham isnt that near.

Always assuming of course, that we have the right George and Ann marrying! So, quite rightly get that birth cert first before you assume these are the right people. Then we will know the mothers name and be able to search for the correct marriage. He may have even remarried to a second Ann.

Andrea

Andrea Report 16 Oct 2007 11:59

Crikey, Thanks Heather, that's really helpful and some good tips. I take it you've been doing this a while?

Andrea

Andrea Report 16 Oct 2007 12:06

Oh also, I don't think Ann died until 1900. She appears on the 1871, 1881, 1891 census (where they are living in Gt Yarmouth) but is not on 1901 (George is shown as a widower). I have found a death registerd Jan/Feb/Mar 1900 in Yarmouth with the right EYB which I think is her.

However I know from another branch of my tree that it is entirely possible that there were two wives both called Ann. I probably need to slow down and get it all straight in my head!

Heather

Heather Report 16 Oct 2007 12:11

Ah, yes I wondered if there were two wives. Take it slowly - keep all the bits people have found here - print them off as they will come in to place some time but you must always verify facts before moving on. Get the birth cert - £7 from GRO online, never pay more, using the refs from freebmd.

PS The ann I mentioned possibly dying was the possible first daughter born Stalham in 1852.

Heather Report 16 Oct 2007 12:13

Ill nudge up the tips for newbies for you. Ive been doing this maybe 4 or 5 years now but Im still a relative newbie and there are people on here who are brilliant.

Andrea

Andrea Report 16 Oct 2007 12:44

Thanks for all your help. I'll definitely read those tips.
I've just ordered Great Grandad William's birth cert so when it arrives I'll hopefully be able to confirm George and Ann and get her maiden name.

Not sure that will help me find a record of George's birth though so any more help in that direction would be great.

Heather

Heather Report 16 Oct 2007 12:47

Well, if you get the birth cert, you can hopefully find the marriage ref then you can buy the marriage cert which will give his fathers name and occupation - which will help trace his birth.
