Betsy Potts / Hope was probably born Betsy (or Elizabeth) Hope and then married a Mr. Potts before her marriage to Benjamin, and Lancashire BMD have listed her under both surnames on the index. Kate.

Thanks, Kate. That's what I was intending to say - but not succeeding in being so clear! Christine

Elizabeth/Betsy might not have been Benjamin's servant. They could have lived in the same house and realised that their needs could be met if they married i.e.He needed someone to look after his kids, she needed a roof over her and her daughters head (Her husband could have been a living in servant or have deserted her.)Harriet could have been 'adopted' by him.

I think generally he needed someone to look after the kids, on 1881 census I think that she may have been either a widow, husband died, or maybe she had a child out of wedlock. Will have to dig a little deeper I think as I'm currious about harriet potts. On marraige index it says her surname was standring, just to make my hunting complicated lol. thx for everyones help Nicola

By the way, since Betsy / Elizabeth was born in Bedfordshire and Harriet in Stockport, the Hope / Potts marriage would likely have taken place in Bedfordshire or Cheshire, so not likely to be on Lancashire BMD. And it could well be in one of the years that is not yet complete on FreeBMD. If you can get Harriet Pott's birth certificate it should help. Back in a minute - I just need to look through the thread again for dates.... Kate.

This is a possibility for Harriet's birth registration, from Cheshire BMD: Cheshire Birth indexes for the years: 1875 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference POTTS Harriet Stockport Second Stockport ST2/35/34 and this is the corresponding FreeBMD entry: Births Jun 1875 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Potts Harriet Stockport 8a 82 Can't see a Hope / Potts marriage on Cheshire BMD. You could try slogging through the GRO indexes for it though, starting with Jun 1875 and working back. Kate.

Oh, or you could look for the Hope / Potts marriage on Family Relatives. Kate.
