Oh, or you could look for the Hope / Potts marriage on Family Relatives. Kate.

Kate

Kate Report 16 Aug 2006 22:59

This is a possibility for Harriet's birth registration, from Cheshire BMD: Cheshire Birth indexes for the years: 1875 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference POTTS Harriet Stockport Second Stockport ST2/35/34 and this is the corresponding FreeBMD entry: Births Jun 1875 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Potts Harriet Stockport 8a 82 Can't see a Hope / Potts marriage on Cheshire BMD. You could try slogging through the GRO indexes for it though, starting with Jun 1875 and working back. Kate.

Kate Report 16 Aug 2006 22:53

By the way, since Betsy / Elizabeth was born in Bedfordshire and Harriet in Stockport, the Hope / Potts marriage would likely have taken place in Bedfordshire or Cheshire, so not likely to be on Lancashire BMD. And it could well be in one of the years that is not yet complete on FreeBMD. If you can get Harriet Pott's birth certificate it should help. Back in a minute - I just need to look through the thread again for dates.... Kate.

I think generally he needed someone to look after the kids, on 1881 census I think that she may have been either a widow, husband died, or maybe she had a child out of wedlock. Will have to dig a little deeper I think as I'm currious about harriet potts. On marraige index it says her surname was standring, just to make my hunting complicated lol. thx for everyones help Nicola

Janet 693215 Report 16 Aug 2006 21:40

Elizabeth/Betsy might not have been Benjamin's servant. They could have lived in the same house and realised that their needs could be met if they married i.e.He needed someone to look after his kids, she needed a roof over her and her daughters head (Her husband could have been a living in servant or have deserted her.)Harriet could have been 'adopted' by him.

Thanks, Kate. That's what I was intending to say - but not succeeding in being so clear! Christine

Kate Report 16 Aug 2006 17:31

Betsy Potts / Hope was probably born Betsy (or Elizabeth) Hope and then married a Mr. Potts before her marriage to Benjamin, and Lancashire BMD have listed her under both surnames on the index. Kate.

Nicola, I hope you copied all the information on the other thread before you deleted it - could always prove useful, especially when you can get your head around the information you are now being given. Perhaps next time just nudge your thread up. Maureen

Christine in Herts Report 16 Aug 2006 14:17

No - it wasn't so much the risk of misspelling STANDRING, as that it showed Betsey's other name. Christine

sorry maureen, I put this up because I was desparate and wanted it to be seen, the query before was slightly different to this one. Nicola x

NicolaDunbyNocula Report 16 Aug 2006 14:11

I know what you mean christine about it being complicated, all through the census's its either standing, standering, or standring lol But I have to say I am sure its deffinately standring because I have found the marraige for benjamin and Ann Darlington, Sept quarter 1852 8e 20. Which would tie in with their first childs birth in 1853. Nicola

I think you could be right there, fiona I was thinking the same thing. Why is it our ancesters never make it easy for us lol Was really hard to pin point these as on one of the census's there's a couple of dates that are slightly wrong about 4 years out lol but am sure its them as everything else seems to match up. thx again Nicola x

Christine in Herts

Christine in Herts Report 16 Aug 2006 14:07

It's more complicated. ''Standring'' has an asterisk, so I clicked on it (it means there's a query on the name)... Betsy POTTS, is also Betsy HOPE. perhaps she was still married to someone else up until then?? Christine PS - can't see a POTTS/HOPE marriage on Lancs BMD

Christine in Herts

Christine in Herts Report 16 Aug 2006 14:05

How about this one - Lancs BMD Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1885 Surname Forename(s): Surname Forename(s): Church / Register Office: Registers At: Reference STANDRING * Benjamin: POTTS Betsy: Failsworth, St. John the Evangelist: Oldham: CE214/2/65 Christine PS - you could get a Register page copy instead of a cert.

Thx for that fiona I am trying to work this out because it says that Harriet Standring married a relative of my husbands Arthur Boustead born c1871, in 1893 March Quarter, salford, greater manchester, lancashire. Is too confusing for me lol Nicola
