Please will someone take a look on Ancestry at the following and let me know what it means:-

Birth of Sadie Barnes, JAS 1924....she is in hand writing at the bottom of the page, left hand side.

It says...Holborn 1b see M29....this is the part I would appreciate an opinion on please.

It looks like it said see May '24, then that was crossed out to M. '24.
She was listed in JFM 1924.

SORRY, no, I'm wrong again, different MMN and place.

an entry mistake by GRO, into the worng year, ,and her birth has been entered into the correct year ,,, 1929..,Sadie Barnes mmn Barnes,,,,,,,? or change of surname in 1929,,but that would have been crossed out in 1924 possibly and amended,,,,,,,?,

as there was also another Sadie Barnes registered the same year in J/M with a maiden name it looks to be a entry error by GRO,,,,,,,,placed in wrong year and wrong month,,,,,,

Hi Gwyn,

I am searching in a pot of treacle as this is the tree I am doing for a friend. The Sadie I am looking for should be Sadie Wilson. When she married a GI in 1945 she gave her dob as 29th August 1924.

I have been unable to find the name Wilson so thought I would look under the mothers maiden name which was Barnes.

This is how I found the hand written entry.

The next child after Sadie was registered under the name of Wilson in 1929, and I do have that cert.

Not sure what the procedure is for the change of name for a child, if in fact it is re-registered!!!!

Yes, she is registered in JFM 1929, MMN Barnes.

Sounds like she lied about her age to marry the GI, making herself 21 instead of 16.

Just checked that out and there is a Sadie Barnes registered in JFM Holborn 1929........I will have to go back to my friend and see if she knows anything that could shed some light on this.

Sadies` mother died in 1931 leaving 3 girls, Eileen who was the eldest, Sadie, who gave her birth year as 1924, but who was possibly re-registered in 1929, and lena, the one I have a small birth cert for, who was born in 1929.

Many thanks for your time and efforts guys, it is very much appreciated.

I would say that Sadie was bn to Miss Barnes and then used the Wilson married surame of the husband,,,,she wouldnt have been able to lie about her age as she would need a visa, passport, and imigration papers,,all would even then carry DOB,,,,,,

Kay,

I agree with you re. needing official documents to enter the States, but I am unable to find her using the dob of 29th August 1924, she gave on her USA papers

I have searched under Wilson, which was her fathers surname, and had no luck, but for her to have been given permission to marry an American without proof of age etc. she must have been registered.

As I said in an earlier message, her sister lena was registered in December 1929, and they were not twins.

It is back to the drawing board.

Potty Report 10 Jun 2008 17:11

This is from freebmds transcribers knowledge base:

I have came across the following manuscript addition to the typed page Tarrant Leslie I Of Wight 2b Dec/1926. What does “Dec/1926” mean and how I can load this particular entry?
These “see later date” entries are important; they are for people who were registered late. The surname, forenames, districts and volume numbers usually follow the set pattern but the page number contains a reference to a different date and/or page number e.g. “see Jun/35”, “D/1035”, “see /22”, etc

So, it looks as if Sadie's birth was not registered when it should have been but was registered in 1929 (possibly at the same time as the other child.) Do you have the registration for the eldest, Eileen?

Kay????

Kay???? Report 10 Jun 2008 17:15

she may not have been here but in Ireland,,,?as all three girls,,,Eileen,Sadie and Lena are commonly used names among est the Irish famlies,,,,,

did you find Wilson and Barnes marriage,??

Kathlyn

Kathlyn Report 10 Jun 2008 17:20

Potty,

That does make sense, as my friend did say that Lene had not been registered, but I do have a copy of a "small" birth cert issued by Islington RO. I have sent off for a full copy of this cert.

Maybe, my friend thought it was her mother who was not registered but infact it was her aunt Sadie.

What would have been the penalty for such a late registration, ie. 5 years?

I am unable to find a registration for the eldest child Eileen, but will search again.

Your info has given me a new route to go down, many thanks to you Potty and to all you others. You are all GEMS.
