I note that the image of the Parish Register for John and Mary Ann's marriage shows that the witnesses were James Every and Elizabeth Every ........ obviously related to Mary Ann

Have you tried to trace James and/or Elizabeth?

snap, Maddie!

Clive

Clive Report 26 Feb 2017 19:32

Hi Maddie,

Thanks - I must have misread the date as 1848 but it is clearly 1842 and this is definitely him.

The John Colocott who dies in 1884 is his son and John Thomas Colocott is his Grandson.

The John Colcott that you found in the 1841 census is a good possibility also. When I looked at the handwritten version on Ancestry it looks very much like it could say Colicott. The next name on the census looks very much like Grace Colicott (Aged 25) and is possibly a daughter?. I can't find anything on her that fits though?

Many Thanks

Clive

I think this is Elizabeth Every, b.1817 and her brother Nicholas b.1820 on the 1841 Census ..... ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 (and only on that census). Elizabeth would have been 23 and Nicholas 20.

Plus her name is listed first, which is not usual if they were married.

Possible!!!

William's mother was also called Elizabeth, but an Elizabeth Tucker of appropriate age died in 1830, so Robert could have married another Elizabeth

Sylvia - Many thanks for this - lots of information! I will need some time to digest it all!

The Lambeth address in the will looks like it is John Colocotts son John. I suspect he actually died in Devon as the will is from that area and there is no evidence of him living with his son in the 1841 census.

I never realized that they rounded the ages on the 1841 census - that explains a couple of age discrepancies that I have on other parts of my tree!

As you are in Canada, I was wondering if you were able to trace anything on Arthur Colocott (Born 1884 Egremont Cheshire / Liverpool). I think he married Agnes Maud Finch in 1907 but then seems to emigrate to Canada in 1910 without her. He joined the Canadian army in WW1 and died in hospital in Aberdeen in 1916. I am trying to find out if he had any children, either in the UK or in Canada.

Best Regards

Clive
