Could be that she was married twice so a marriage would be in her married name??

It seems from all today's striving, the 1861 census I was given for Elizabeth Overton was the wrong person

This is the 1861 though. Why would Ben Saunders's daughter have Alexander as a surname?

In-law can also refer to step relatives, I've also seen in my own family referring to niece.

Just to explain my idea for the name Alexander:-
I thought that maybe Elizabeth Saunders could have married someone with surname Alexander and her husband died and she went on the marry John Overton .............but haven't found anything to proove that yet. :-(

If you're searching Emma Overton then do you have any certificates?
Birth certificate will give you her parents name, including mother's mmn which will help enormously.
