Thanks Potty.
especially the photo. I did an 1841 census for Moses Stott and he came up as his birth year 1826 and his mother Mary Stott born 1801. have no more details of her and no mention of a husband. She had two daughters Harriet and Ann.
thank you so much for your help.
Kind regards
Brenda

Your Moses would seem to be the one in the 1841 posted on 3rd June by Rootgatherer. There are several trees on ancestry that have him married to Elizabeth Clegg and although there is a marriage in 1817 at Elland for that couple, there is really no way to prove it is the correct Moses.

First note that adult (15+) ages were supposed to be rounded down ro a mult of 5 in 1841.

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Marriages Sep 1910 (>99%)
Fitzpatrick Mary E Halifax 9a 1018
Harling Sarah J Halifax 9a 1018
Lyons John H Halifax 9a 1018
Stott Samuel H Halifax 9a 1018

It's always worth supplementing FreeBMD's (or whoever's) transcription of the GRO index with the local index, if one's available online - see:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd
In particular, http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/

Cheshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1918
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
STOTT Samuel Henry GOODMAN Clara Elizabeth Seacombe, St Paul Wirral C10/5/133

Cheshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1933
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
STOTT Wilfred David ROE Hilda Maud Birkenhead, Civil Marriage Wirral BW/158/111

Births Dec 1936 (>99%)
STOTT Brenda W Roe Birkenhead 8a 628

Cheshire Birth indexes for the years: 1936 to 1938
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
STOTT Brenda Winifred Birkenhead North Wirral ROE BKN/3/37

As you can see from the above examples, the two indexes contain difft info.
However, the entries one will receive certified copies of should contain the same info (up to transcription errors).
The main difference is the local index must give info on which rego one can find the entry in.
In the case of marrs, this would identify the church (although the local ref might not be explicitly decoded, although Cheshire's is).
Pre-1898, non-conformists (excl jews and quakers) weren't authorized to keep official marr regos, so a marr in a non-conformist church would need the registrar to attend so the couple could sign his official register.
Post-1898, non-conformists were authorized to keep official regos (except for RCs who only got authorized in the 1980s).

For births & deaths, the local index must identify which subdistrict rego has the event.
So we can see Brenda was rego'ed in the newly created Birkenhead North subdistrict, rather than, say, the Tranmere subdistrict which was also in Birkenhead RD.
