Wendy Report 12 Dec 2013 02:13

Hi all. After a bit of a break, I am back researching a new and interesting branch of the family.
By chance, I have found my GG Grandmother's brother, William Mackay Broomhead. From the records I have found, I am certain he is correct as his address is at 2 Ely Place, Bethnal Green as per the 1881 census. This address and neighbouring houses continually appear for several different ancestors.
William was the son of James Broomhead (1815-1871) and Eliza Taylor (1815-1898). Brother to Eliza Broomhead (1841-?). Eliza married Henry Smith, they were my GGGrandparents. Also brother to Edwin, Edward, Caroline and Henry. (There may be more siblings)
William Mackay Broomhead married Elizabeth Piper, daughter of William Piper.
I am interested in finding more information regarding William, in particular the connection to his middle name Mackay, possibly through his mother Eliza Taylor, or through his Paternal grandmother Elizabeth (nee unknown), C1790-1882.
Thanks for any help I can get.

You have not given a year of birth for William, and whether you have him in preceding censuses.

Could you copy over that 1881 census?

Thanks

Thankyou.
I do apologise. William was born C 1849.
I am not a fully paid member of Ancestry (can't afford it). That is why I am asking for help.
As many would already know, I do as much research and go as far as I can before asking.
I do not have any certificates or documents for these people, and those that are still alive in the family have no idea about these people.
I also live in Australia, and have no access to the registries in England.

With my initial search for William Mackay I was able to bring up a selection of records to view, and I selected the 1881 census. As this had a familiar address, I got all excited (as we do), I tried to return to the list of names and records to see more, and for some reason it just plain refused to show me anything. After a refresh and redoing the info, no names came up. I'm guessing it's my computer as a similar thing happened while searching LDS.

I do appreciate any help given, even if I already have it, as there is always some little bit extra for the records.

Wendy Report 12 Dec 2013 08:04

Something I forgot to include initially is that there would appear to have been a William Mackay Broomhead born C1842, and died C1849. From what I can interpret, most likely to be an older brother, and WMB II was given the same name. I haven't been able to find any more info so far.

As well as William, these children were also baptised on the same day in 1847: Henry, Eliza and Edwin Corbett. There is something written in the margin against them. It looks like F for all except Henry and looks like 08.

TY Potty...nice info there.

Here's a little story as to why I am so very interested in William, more so his name.
When my son was born, his father suggested a name which I loved. His father was in the army and had sailed around, drove past and flown over this city in Queensland without ever going there. I kept the original spelling, and so my son was called MACKAY. 3 weeks after his birth I met up with my Scottish uncle and my cousins, and he asked if I named him after my uncle. It turned out he was adopted and had only just found his real name and had it legally changed ... to MACKAY. Mum went back to England a few years ago and went to Scotland, and brought back a Mackay tartan scarf for my son, as his namesake. After finding William's name, I am now starting to wonder if there aren't some greater forces at work here, and if it is possible that there is a connection to the Mackay clan somewhere in that branch of the tree.

Well, that makes it even more interesting.
I'm thinking there has to be someone important or something significant to use Mackay as a middle name for 2 boys, and even more so as to name William the same as his deceased brother. They really wanted that name used.

TY again Potty, more work for me to add to the tree :)

Alvie, I did see that family, but disregarded them as the faimly I was concentrating on. I have no doubt there is a connection somewhere, and I thankyou for posting that. It is always nice to be able to go back later on and cross check. :)

James, the father of Selina, was James Edward according to her baptism and is too old to be William's father but the from occupation could be related. I did find an Edward of the right age on the 1841 but he was with a much older James

From Rootgatherer... "From the image the son is listed as William Mackay James Broomhead."
This again makes me strongly believe that there is someone of importance to the family with the name or a link to Mackay. It was important enough to name not 1 but 3 children with it, and for William to name his own son the same, and adding his father's name also.

Please excuse me if I seem to answer people out of order or delayed. I am adding names and data to my tree in order of importance, so will be darting from one entry to another. ;-)
