Ruth, no it wouldn't confirm that I'm afraid, lots of middle names are just dropped... in any case the Henry Leek is still with his parents when Henry Radley is elsewhere ( i think , getting confused )

Leek could have been a middle name given to him because of a family connection .... most commonly, it is mother's or grandmother's maiden name


which is why I was trying to find the marriages of Henry's parents or grandparents.


It could also refer to a godparent.


It would be rare for it to refer to his birth name


and in fact, if it did, then it is far more likely that in later life he would have dropped the Radley and reverted to Leek



I'm afraid this may well be one of those family stories that has no basis in truth ..... may be there was a Henry Radley and a Henry Leek who were related ...... and the story has got confused over the years.


It may well be that your new cousin has been unwittingly following the wrong family.





but I must also ask why you think that this family line is the one to follow to find out if your daughter has an inherited illness?

because my cousin was lucky enough to know our granparents, and he used to tell him that his name was leek and that moses and martha took him in and he took their name.. radley

I have to agree with Sylvia.

Why do you think that your side of the family are the ones that passed this illness on?

I don't mean to pry, it's just that my daughter has just discovered that hers is passed on from her father, his family did confirm it when they learn't that she was in hospital, but we had no idea before she was taken ill last month.

There was no formalized adoption until about 1927 ..... so there will be no documents to find


Before 1927, adoptions took place, but they were usually informal ones with family or friends taking in babies, or stranger adoptions from orphanages.


Usually no documents, although occasionally orphanages kept records




We've got Henry with Moses and Martha going quite a way back ................. no sign of a Leek


No sign of a family connection between them .............. though they probably knew each other as it would have been quite a small place in those days.



so if he was indeed adopted or taken in by Moses and Martha, there is I'm afraid no way to tell who his parents were.



and anyway ......... you would have to buy the death certificate of every possible member of the family to see if any one had died of the illness that your daughter has.



Have you traced back ALL of the other lines that contribute to your daughter's genetics??

Sometimes a genetic illness may lie latent (for want of a better word) for one or more generations

I've just come back on, and wanted to say a relative asked me a similar question recently re a genetic condition...none of the family I have traced on the two sides that connect us appear to have suffered from it...but that's really the thing, it is only modern diagnostics that have pinpointed the condition...it would just have been an 'educated guess' in times past.

Someone may indeed have suffered from it, but other illnesses were ascribed. I don't want to pry either, but only you know if it was something that would be 'obvious' , though if it is baffling your doctor i assume it isn't.

Mutations may also arise, and cause a genetic illness

I agree.
In my daughters case, nothing known regarding the grandparents with this illness, but out of 12 children of this couple, 3 possibly 4 have this, all being recently found out, my daughter is the the first of the grandchildren with it .

Sorry to but in but if Christopher Leek is with Moses in 1881 and he was born in Lewisham 1874 then why can't he be Henry radley.
I can't see Christopher in 1891 but can see Henry Radley 1891 and visa versu can't see Henry 1881 but can see Christopher.

I have been out for a couple of drinks so forgive me .
It seems to me we have one in the same person here,or am i missing something.

Annie Jane Leek born @ 1856 died 1874 in St George Hanover Square Middlesex.

I suppose that is possible


but why change both his names?

That's what I was thinking Maryb.........and there may be no connection family wise to the Radley's at all.......they would probably have been paid to take him in??

Christopher William Leek was born to Annie Leek, in the Lewisham Union Workhouse, and was baptised privately


that was I think usually done when the baby was sickly when born

In 1881 Martha Radley was a monthly nurse,maybe she had been looking after Christopher when his mum died.
1871 the radleys were in District 14 image 19 St pauls Deptford.
1871 Jane Leek born 1855 her dad was HENRY C Leek they were in District 25 image 26,could this be the Annie Jane Leek 1856 died 1874???????
