Hi rootgatherer,I am just searching records for HMS Galatea to see if this is a definate match for our Ebenezer born 1878 although it does say on your reply his date of birth is 1876 ,let you know if I have any look.regards sandra

HMS Galatea
Builder: Robert Napier & Sons, Govan
Laid down: 21 April 1885
Launched: 10 March 1887
Fate: Sold for breaking up 4 April 1905

I think these dates for Ebenezer as on the 1901 censor he was in Kent,I have a E kirkpatrick in Hull on the 1911 censor and wonder if this also was Ebenezer as he is not on the family censor in Grimsby for 1911 is there anyway I can look at censors for 1921 and 1931 to see if he was back in Grimsby with the family as I cannot trace him anywhere and cannot find a death for him either

Sandra, you will not be able to view the 1921 and 1931 census until 2021 and 2031 respectively.

Just in the passing Sandra, did you ever actually look at the image for the 1911 census for the Kirkpatrick family? Ebenezer is listed with his wife and children but his entry has been scored through - perhaps because he was out being a fisherman on the night of the census?

The date of birth here matches that of your Jessie Barnett Sutherland Kirkpatrick.
So the Toyne marriage is correct.

Hi Rootgatherer,
Thank you for your reply yes I did see Ebenezer was crossed out on the 1911 censor thats why I wondered where he was ,I did see a E kirkpatrick on the 1911 censor born Scotland but that was in Hull on the censor and as that is just across the River Humber from Grimsby its a possibility it was him although the birth date is a couple of years out,as I did not know my Grandparents (Ebenezer and Margaret )I was just trying to find out when and where he Died ,I know it must have been after 1921 as my dad and his 2 sisters were born Ivy the youngest in 1921 sadly the children were put in childrens homes ,Ebenezer is on my dads marriage certificate in 1942 as deceased but I cannot find a death anywhere as to when,A possibility I have for his wife Margaret I was wondering if he died as I found a marriage on freebmd for a Margaret Kirkpatrick in 1937 to a George Richmond in Grimsby, and a Margaret Richmond who died in Grimsby in 1941 age 62 which would fit in with her age,I will still keep searching to try and find out where he ended up,hope I have not confused you too much .
regards Sandra

Hi Kucinta,
I have been looking on my tree and the Ebenezer on the photo born 1874 is a cousin to my grandad Ebenezer born 1878. The Ebenezer born 1874 his father The Daniel Kirkpatrick (born 1849) above is a brother to John Kirkpatrick (born 1851) who is the father of Ebenezer born 1878 .so there is a family blood tie there after all ..The parents of Daniel born 1849 and John born 1851 are Ebenezer Kirkpatrick and Ellen Cromarty.
thanks again for the lovely photo .All I need now is to find when and where my grandad died.
best wishes Sandra

Is this your Ebenezer in 1916? If so it may be worth searching at the National Archives for Naval records.

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/29865/pages/12230/page.pdf

Have you considered that he may have died at sea?

If you buy the possible marriage for Margaret Kirkpatrick, it would let you know one way or the other if she is your Margaret.

Tree on Ancestry has Ebenezer S Kirkpatrick died Harray Orkney in 1953 age 74 = 1878/9???

Also on 1911 census Margaret has written he is a fisherman,

1911 for E Kirkpatrick onboard Ethalaida in Grimsby as Ships Officer.
None onboard down as fishermen!!

Thankyou rootgatherer and mary he could possibly died at sea but baffled now as the death in 1953 Harray scotland fits in with birth dates as to when he was born ,but on my dads weddings cert in 1942 it says Ebenezer as deceased but as dad did not grow up with his parents maybe he thought he was dead. ,where as maybe Ebenezer went back to scotland ,I will order a death certificate for him to see what info is on there see if it is him .
best wishes sandra

Mary Report 23 Jul 2012 11:44

Just found more info it says he died 12/1/1953 at Seaview Harray Orkney.

Maybe your dad didn't know if he was alive or dead when he married in 1942.

Maryb

EDIT you seem to have had that info before from Ian Sutherland,is that correct??

You can download death registrations prior to 1962 from Scotlandspeople. So you will know instantly if that Ebenezer is your man.

Do come back and let us know please Sandra.

Well done Sandra. You must be pretty excited!

Did it say on the death reistration if he was "widow of" or "married to" Margaret please? Who was the informant? Will that help you track down Margaret?

Sandra

Sandra Report 24 Jul 2012 10:53

Hi Rootgatherer ,
It had him down as single and his nephew John T kirkpatrick as present ,He died of a cerabal haemorrhage John must be a son of one of his brothers with having the same surname so maybe he is still alive I will see what i can find out,I think now that margaret and Ebenezer have been divorced and looking on freebmd Margaret kirkpatrick married a George Richmond in Grimsby in 1937 and there is a death on there for Margaret Richmond in 1941 aged 62 which would tie in with her birth date.As she was the only margaret kirkpatrick in Grimsby it must be her.I have put it in my tree to see if I get any more family trees with a link.
best wishes Sandra
