Sorry I`ve only just got back. I am in the Uk so guess our time zones are out of sinq. My great grandmother Agnes Philpot was a first cousin to Edward King (who never married). I know this is a long shot but at present its all I have to go on. I am grateful for all your help.
kind regards
Jeanne

Luck of the draw - somehow you attracted the three resident Canadians here. You did post latish, I guess that explains it.

Do you have Agnes Philpot's parents' names?

If she was first cousin, then one of her parents was a sibling to one of Edward's parents.

The connection may not have been Philpot - or King. It could have been their mothers who were siblings.

Edward King was born 1829. Now, I'm no spring chicken, and the oldest gr-grparent I have was born in 1851 -- very close to 100 years before me.

But true, some of my mum's gr-grparents were born in the 1820s. So if you're somewhere between my mum and me, that makes sense.

There are only two Agnes Philpot marriages 1840-1870 -- one in South Molton in 1841 and one in Liverpool in 1865. Would she be the one in 1865?

The thing is, in order to try to help, we really do need the info you have and we don't.

The record in the IGI has Walker King of Stone, Kent, marrying Ann Heberden on 15 May 1823 in St James Westminster.

There is another female Heberden marriage in the same batch, M147516, to an Andrewes. No connection there. And no King-Philpot or Heberden-Philpot marriage in that batch.

But you must know at least Agnes's father's name, from her marriage certificate, and maybe her mother's name ...

In any event, if Agnes was first cousin to Edward King, it wouldn't have been because one of Edward's siblings married a Philpot!

So, Agnes Philpot (assuming that's her maiden name) was a child of a male Philpot who married a female King who was a sister of Edward, the Bishop?
Can you tell us who she married? It's sometimes easier to trace backwards through the censuses.

Sorry, Janey, I posted before I saw your answer. I see we came to completely opposite conclusions. I've got to think about it some more but I'm drinking red wine, doesn't help!

Just for giggles.

Ann Heberden
Christening: 11 OCT 1805 St James, Westminster, London, England
Father: William Heberden Family
Mother: Elizabeth Catherine
batch C320518

Other children of that marriage:

Emily Henrietta, 1807
Mary, 1804

No marriage for either one in the IGI.

Hey, MM. Happy hour in central Canada. ;)

"So, Agnes Philpot was a child of a male Philpot who married a female King who was a sister of Edward, the Bishop?"

-- but that wouldn't make her a first cousin of Edward, it would make her a niece of Edward the Bishop.

She could have been the child of a male Philpot who married a female Heperden who was a sister of Edward's mother.

Or the child of a male Philpot who married a female King who was a sister of Edward's father.

The way I figure it. But maybe "first cousin" wasn't quite it?

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 15 May 2009 23:35

Yes, the red wine affected me. Of course, if Agnes was a first cousin of the Bish she wasn't a child of his sister, she was a child of Walker's sister or Walker's wife's sister,
I still think the best way is to trace Jeanne's family backwards through the censuses which means more info from you, Jeanne!

p.s. Sometimes Happy Hour lasts more than an hour!

You raised an interesting point there, Janey, when our gt. grandparents were born, I went back to check mine. They were 1848, 1862, 1849, 1857, 1858, 1858, 1869, 1869. Pretty consistent.

Hello Again
This is what I have so far. Agnes Philpot was born 1863 and was married to Harry Spicer. Agnes`s father was Walter Philpot. Her mother`s maiden name I can`t find - the census just said that she was called Ann. I have a letter wriiten by my great grandmother so I know for sure the relationship existed - but so many brick walls!!!! Any more ideas?
Thanks again, I`m now off to bed.

Now I'm losing it, this is the closest I can find but she's born Southampton and father's name is Richard.

I'm stuck! Where are my fellow Cannucks?
Oh, I know, long weekend, off to the cottage or the campground.
Amazes me that we celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday but the Brits don't.

Another question, Jeanne. You said the census said that Agnes' mother was Ann. Which census was that? And where have I gone wrong?

Jean

Jean Report 17 May 2009 18:13

Hi, The 1881 entry born in Longstock is correct, as they all came from the Romsey area but I don`t think the Richard in Southampton is a direct connection. Walter Philpot was Agnes`s father he was born 1837 and died 1865 (1841 census) Ann Philpot, Agnes`s mother is shown as the Head of the family in 1871 census and Agnes is then 7. I think we need to find Ann Philpots maiden name as I feel one of her brothers or sisters must have married either one of Walker Kings brothers or sisters or his wife Ann Heberdens brothers or sisters.Walker King was an Archdean of Rochester and his father also was a clergyman. Ann Heberdens father was a doctor but I have no other info on their family. Lots of pieces but at present they do not fi ttogether very well. Thanks again for taking so much interest.

JaneyCanuck Report 17 May 2009 18:51

I am absolutely hanged if I can find this 1871 census with Ann as HOH.

Where is the household? Ann's date/place of birth?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 17 May 2009 18:53

Here we are.

Ann Philpot 33
William Philpot 9 - born Stockbridge
Agness Philpot 7
Emily Philpot 5

Civil Parish: Longstock

Name: Ann Philpot
Age: 33
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1838
Relation: Head
Where born: Stockbridge, Hampshire, England

There was a child older than Agnes, which is info that helps place a marriage.

It is possible, of course, that there was no marriage.

I've been searching and searching with no results. Just had a thought, how about sending off for Agnes' birth certificate to get mother's maiden name? This would be it, wouldn't it?
