I have sent for Agnes`s birth cert today and it should arrive on Friday. I will keep you posted.

The parents marriage is confusing. I can find Walters birth and death which fits with Ann being the HOH in 1871. but no trace of a marraige date. the only marriage I can find is with a William Philpot but the death is all wrong. I shall send for the certs first thing tomorrow ( or later on today) its now 1.30 am here and I must go. Catch up soon.

I'd be interested in knowing mother's maiden name when you get the birth certificate. I'm confused as to why we couldn't find parents' marriage.

You don't need any other info other than her name which is spelled Philpot on index.

Have been searching for Walters marriage to Ann with no success but have found a William Philpott ref 2 c 139 married in Stockbridge in 1862. which would fit. I have seen Philpot spelt with one and two T`s on the census entry for the same family so need to do some more checking on the William theory. Not sure how I go about getting a copy of Ann`s birth certificate but will find out as at present it seems like the best bet Still so near but so far..

I've been searching and searching with no results. Just had a thought, how about sending off for Agnes' birth certificate to get mother's maiden name? This would be it, wouldn't it?

There was a child older than Agnes, which is info that helps place a marriage.

It is possible, of course, that there was no marriage.

I am absolutely hanged if I can find this 1871 census with Ann as HOH.

Where is the household? Ann's date/place of birth?

Hi, The 1881 entry born in Longstock is correct, as they all came from the Romsey area but I don`t think the Richard in Southampton is a direct connection. Walter Philpot was Agnes`s father he was born 1837 and died 1865 (1841 census) Ann Philpot, Agnes`s mother is shown as the Head of the family in 1871 census and Agnes is then 7. I think we need to find Ann Philpots maiden name as I feel one of her brothers or sisters must have married either one of Walker Kings brothers or sisters or his wife Ann Heberdens brothers or sisters.Walker King was an Archdean of Rochester and his father also was a clergyman. Ann Heberdens father was a doctor but I have no other info on their family. Lots of pieces but at present they do not fi ttogether very well. Thanks again for taking so much interest.

Another question, Jeanne. You said the census said that Agnes' mother was Ann. Which census was that? And where have I gone wrong?

This is what I have so far. Agnes Philpot was born 1863 and was married to Harry Spicer. Agnes`s father was Walter Philpot. Her mother`s maiden name I can`t find - the census just said that she was called Ann. I have a letter wriiten by my great grandmother so I know for sure the relationship existed - but so many brick walls!!!! Any more ideas?

You raised an interesting point there, Janey, when our gt. grandparents were born, I went back to check mine. They were 1848, 1862, 1849, 1857, 1858, 1858, 1869, 1869. Pretty consistent.

Yes, the red wine affected me. Of course, if Agnes was a first cousin of the Bish she wasn't a child of his sister, she was a child of Walker's sister or Walker's wife's sister,
I still think the best way is to trace Jeanne's family backwards through the censuses which means more info from you, Jeanne!
