Jo

You certainly aren't useless, far from it, there is a lot of info posted in the thread (maybe too much but that is my fault) and it takes time to to sort through it.

Start with the birth cert for Jane Elizabeth, that will at least give us a clue as to whether James and Leah are her parents.

Assuming (for now) they are her parents you can then work on confirming the birth/marriage details for James and Leah The census information is a useful a guide to where and when things happened.

Working back one generation at a time is the key, once you confirm the early stuff the census returns will make more sense, the census gives clues but it isn't the be all and end all of research anyway.

I wouldn't worry about the death for Daniel at the moment, best to work steadily backwards and confirm that Daniel is part of the family before rushing in to kill him off.

I've probably had a bit more practice with the census.

If and when you need any help just shout out, this thread has lots of stuff that we can either use or discount at some point and make things a bit clearer for you.

Hi margaret,

Is this Walter, Walter Isaac Jackson's father? and family?

Battenburg

Battenburg Report 28 Jul 2008 22:08

No I would say this is the Walter Isaac Jackson and Elizabeth Stuckey .
Walter is obviously known by Jackson and Fisher.Thats why Ethel Victoria Fisher Jackson has both names and why Walter married as Jackson.

My gt grandfathers surname was Burden.
He married as Darby Burden. Darby being his grandfathers name. His grandparents never married.
His grandfather died leaving a will in which gt grand was left money.
After gt grand married he dropped the surname Burden and registered all his children as Darby

When I was looking for gt grand Darby on the census he disapears going backwards. It was only after getting his marriage cert I found him under Burden. His grandmother Burden had one of the grandchildren living with her in 1851

Ah i see. I thought coz of the dates it must be the parents but now i can see that Walter was born 1865, Elizabeth 1872 and they had a Daughter born 1899. Sorry to be a pain. Now i know where Fisher comes from.
Do you know the birth Ref for Walter please?

Darealjolo Report 28 Jul 2008 22:20

Margaret,

Out of the 2 births for Elizabeth, 1 in Pancras the other in Edmonton which 1 do you think is right to order, as i want to order but as my mum is paying for certs i want to get the right one.

Hi Brenda,

I have no idea looks possible, confusing though when they carry on with the name. Thankyou for finding for me.

Battenburg

Battenburg Report 28 Jul 2008 22:43

Yes it is confusing when they keep changing names. My Darby grandmother married twice. I couldnt find her first marriage even though I knew her husbands surname.
It was only after I found out about her father changing his name I found her marriage. She married as Florence D Burden. When I got the cert it was Darby as middle name. Her second marriage to my grandfather gave her name as formely Darby which was the name on her birth cert

Going by the census returns i posted, and the deaths for James, Leah and Daniel it seems the family moved from Pancras to Islington reg districts at some point in 1892.
The '71, '81 and '91 census returns are all in the civil parish of St Pancras (not quite the same thing as the reg district though.)

So which one of these births looks likely?

You should get the marriage cert of Elizabeth Stuckey to Isaac Walter Jackson. It will be interesting to see if there is a fathers name for Isaac.Possibly not.

First one is Edmonton birth district and Edmonton Census district

Second one is Pancras birth and Pancras census district.

Is this the clue needed to clarify which birth cert required.
