It sounds like your thyroid has slowed your metabolsim right down so that your blood flow around your body has also slowd down.(particularly to the extremities like your arms and legs.). This would explain the shrinking back of your veins and also the numbness/ itching. Blood cells carry oxygen to these areas normally. But now it is taking loger to get this oxygen to the cells in your hands and legs.

Noooo, you are experiencing common symptoms. Dont worry!

Once you start taking the thyroxine, these symptoms will disappear after a few weeks.

Your Gp will recheck your blood. (the test is called a thyroid function test)
You may find that the dose may need to be adjusted to suit you so be patient.
Hope this has helped to explain a few concerns

It does seem a horrible illness that takes many forms and makes you fell less than well a lot of the time. Doctors dont seem to be too bothered about checking for it, wild hair and irritable skin, feeling very tired are usual, and eating things like broccolli and sprouts actually slow down the way your thyroxine works.
They are called antigens and can be googled for side effects.
I know at her worst, my daughter did feel she was losing her mind.mood swings and tummy upsets.
Before there was any treatment a lot of sufferers were confined to lunatic assylums and old cartoons of bedlam show prisoners with bulging eyes and goitres.
It does take about 6 weeks for meds to start taking effect and are best taken about half an hour before food for best effect, so if you forget a pill you might not feel so good weeks later. Things take longer to heal and colds take twice as long to recover from.
Funny thing the human body ! Take care.

Benefits, well you never have to pay prescription charges again !

Hi my daughter was diaznosed (sp) with underactive when she was 12 years old, had a small lump like an Adams apple and went to GP. he got some blood tests done, spent a week in hospital.
She was falling asleep when she came from school, freezing cold lack of consintration.Dr. told her it was a Hashimoto type.
Put on thyroxin has to get it checked every year, at first every three months.
Four of my sisters had it also.
Elizabeth.

Hi Ray
Like a lot of the others and yourself I too have an Underactive Thyroid
I have been taking Thyroxine for about 6 years now. At first my doctor couldn't get my level correct so I had different doses for the first couple of years with blood tests every three months. It took a long time but now I am on 100mg Monday to Friday then 50mgs on Saturday and Sunday. The levels seem OK now so I only have blood tests 2 times a year now

The Doctor told me that the Thyroid controls most of our body so if it is either overactive or underactive it can upset lots of our other parts of our body. Headaches, Weight Loss, Tiredness, Itchy, Forgetfulness and many many more.

I hope the tablets will help with your problems I am sure it will
Take Care
KInd Regards
Jackie

Morning Ray, everyone

Lindsey, am particularly interested in broccolli and sprouts which I tend as they are 'green' veg. Thank you, will google, had no idea they could slow my meds down; also the part about colds taking longer to heal.

This is what I adore about being here, that we share and care for each other.

Morning shimms, this thread should be called 101 things your doctor wont tell you !
Tina used to eat sprouts raw, and piled on the cabbage, real cravings !
Yes the ummune system too also slows down recovery, still theres lots of info on the web, and lots more people who have it than we think.
Where better than a family history board to find out about illnesses. check out the old family photos, see who,s the relative most likely to have passed it on !

Oh bless, thank you Lindsey ... yes, I know lots of people with both versions, many of us have a foot in both camps so to speak.

As soon as I was diagnosed I was onto the web; can't look back sadly as I know nothing really about my family.

Never mind, there are those with worst probs. xxx

Hiya Ray... hope you don't mind me adding... I thought I had underactive thyroid last year... I had post-partum hyperactive thyroid, which cleared when my baby was about 6 months... and this is often a precursor. My nan died from complications from hers (treatment is different now).

As it turned out, that wasn't my most pressing problem at all, lol..... my most pressing problem was very new and wouldn't have accounted for the symptoms I have had for a fair few years.... I still don't know what caused those.

Good luck, everyone.. and try this site, it was excellent.

Daff

Just wanted to (((hug))) you, this is the best site I've ever seen.

Goodness, half the veg I love is classed as Goitrogenic foods. Also beginning to perhaps understand why my Thyroxine doesn't always work.

Bless you and Ray for this thread. xxx

Thank you Daff

I was on the phone to my aunt (my fathers sister)
I told her about my thyroid and she casually mentioned
that she has had an underactive thyroid for about,
18 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! at least I know what side of the
family I have inherited from lol.
