I would appreciate a little help here. While this is a fairly unusual name, there are at least a couple of branches of the family throughout the 19th century. They exist under the correct spelling in a number of censii but I am having difficulty finding them in others. I have tried a range of alternative spelling but have had little luck. Perhaps the sleuths here could help me with some that I have not thought of.

Thanks in advance ....

Did you try looking using a wildcard? eg Twy*

Charles

Charles Report 18 Dec 2007 14:22

Margaret .... yes I did, in several variaions. I also tried using just the christian name and the county/parish (e.g. Ashton, Oldham, Manchester).

Have you tried using a child's first name with the parents' first names?

you could also try cutting off the first half of the surname you are searching for...sometimes they are added onto the END of a page as a 'late entry' therefore would not show on the results page.
eg. if you are searching for the name DOPE
The page starts with surnames Dole
The last usual entry is Dope.
The 'late entry' pencilled in is Done
Therefor your search results might show DOLE to DONE.
'n' being BEFORE 'p' it might not recognise that do'p'e is on the page.
So make the search with the letter before OR without anything after at all i.e. Do

Make any sense?
I discovered this after months of searching for my own family birth entries and started thinking we were all adopted! :D...big difference to the years you need - but same principle I suspect

Margaret .....

Yes, I do. I have the family in the 1851 census and have picked them up in the IGI too. I would like to get the 1841 census record as a starting place and work forward and that is one of the places I am having some difficulty.

This is 1851

Esther Twyerould 42
Joseph Twyerould 44
Mary Twyerould 17

Sarah Twyerould 15

Edit: didn't notice the bottom of your last message. Never thought of Twpsould!!

Thanks for that. Just looked at the 1871 image and its definitely a transcription error.

I cannot find them in 1861 even though I know they were witnesses at a wedding in 1863 and married in 1859.

Are you sure that is the right family in the 1851. Joseph isn't there. The image is really bad - I can't see how anyone got the name of Thos for the 12 year old!

Do you know Joseph and Martha's fathers' names?

Joseph's a fish dealer, and they're living at 14 West Street, Oldham.

The image looks like Troywould.

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 18 Dec 2007 19:21

You have three different families here, each with a Joseph Twyerould.

The first Joseph was born in Chester c. 1807, married Esther, and had at least 5 children: Mary, Sarah, Thomas, Samuel and James. He appears in the 1851 and 1861 censuses shown above. He's a coal miner in 1851 and a fish dealer in 1861. Esther died in Oldham in 1866, aged 58, and Joseph died in Oldham in 1891 aged 85.

The second Joseph was born in Droylsden or Clayton, Lancs, was a joiner, married Martha (born Madras), and had at least two children, Joseph James and Dora Elizabeth.

The third Joseph was born in 1864, son of James and Elizabeth, and died in Oldham in 1902 aged 37.

MaryfromItaly Report 18 Dec 2007 20:00

Here's the Joseph born c1807 (now a widower) in 1871, living with his son James and daughter-in law Elizabeth and their children John and Joseph (the 3rd Joseph mentioned above, whose christening is shown in BIVRI). Grandfather Joseph is now a tripe dresser, and they're living at 21 West Street, Oldham.

You guys (generic sense) are amazing. You can see from the different spellings how tricky this one is.

Martha Twyerould (nee Williams) is the sister of my GG Grandmother. The families were quite close and I have written correspondance from my G. Grandmother to Joseph Twyerould. Joseph & Martha were also witnesses to my GG Grandmother's wedding.

Although the Williams family originated in Wigan, Martha and her brother George were born in India while Helena, my GG Grandmother is listed on the various censii as being born at sea (although there is an IGI entry for her being born in Bangalore).

While there is a possibility that the Twyerould family were overseas in 1841, I somehow doubt it as there are IGI and GRO entries showing them in England in the 1830s and 1841.

I am working on the hypothesis that there is a single Twyerould family with Joseph and Esther as the parents. Clearly, the best way to confirm this is to send away for certs which I will do but, initially, I wanted to establish a census and BMD trail.

In any event, thanks soooooooo much for your help so far. If anyone finds 1841, let me know ..... and, yes, I will still keept looking :)

No sooner said than done :-)

1841 England Census
about Joseph Swysworth

Name: Joseph Swysworth
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1811
Gender: Male

Civil Parish: Manchester
Hundred: Salford
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Registration district: Ashton under Lyne
Sub-registration district: Audenshaw
Neighbors: View others on page

Household Members:
Name Age
Joseph Swysworth 30
Esther Swysworth 30
John Swysworth 11
Mary Swysworth 7
Sarah Swysworth 5
Joseph Swysworth 2
Samuel Swysworth 2 Mo

The child born c 1839 who's illegible on the 1851 census but transcribed as Thomas is actually Joseph - no doubt the one who married Martha.

So Joseph and Esther were the parents of Joseph b. 1839 and the grandparents of Joseph b. 1864.

Charles Report 18 Dec 2007 20:42

Wow!!!

Just had a look at the image and this is another transcription error I think.

Thanks a million for this. I think that, based on this I can start tracing the family certainly through the 19th century.

Ivy

Ivy Report 18 Dec 2007 21:17

and these Welsh entries are interesting:

1881
Name: Joseph Twyerould
Age: 73
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1808
Relation: Brother in Law
Gender: Male
Where born: Chester, Cheshire, England

Civil Parish: Ruabon
County/Island: Denbighshire
Country: Wales

Street address: 7 Forge Row
Condition as to marriage: Widow

Occupation: Retired Labourer

Registration district: Wrexham
Sub-registration district: Ruabon
ED, institution, or vessel: 17

Household Members: Name Age
Elizabeth Jones 59
Evan Jones 61
Mary Jane Jones 14
Joseph Twyerould 73

Ivy

Ivy Report 18 Dec 2007 21:21

and this one from 1851, also in the Ruabon sub-registration district:

Name: Elizabeth Twycrole
Age: 59
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1792
Relation: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Shoreditch, Middlesex, England

Civil Parish or Township: Borras Hovah
County/Island: Denbighshire
Country: Wales

Registration district: Wrexham
Sub-registration district: Ruabon
ED, institution, or vessel: 12

Household schedule number: 46
Household Members: Name Age
Elizabeth Twycrole 59

The image is clearly Twycross. If there is any connection between this individual and your family, it can only be through the written appearance of the name with the old-fashioned ss appearing as fs, since the sound of these two surnames is completely different.
