If it is that, you can upgrade to FT2005 cant you, over the net.

Laird - I'm going to try with a proper backup I made on CD a couple of weeks ago. Not quite the latest version, but at least that one might not be corrupted. I think even the auto backup files I was trying to pdf from have probably been corrupted. Nasty. Sue

When you go through the process of sending your tree (or doing an update) to the web site it gives you the option of hiding info on living individuals. Also, if you go to file you can do a temporary privatisation of the info before you send.

Just about to say that Susan - I did exactly the same. Hope it goes OK, but you will need to fix that PDF bug sometime. Try an experiment - build a new FTW file by selecting just a few individuals. Open that and try exporting the tree view to PDF ....

Laird - have just seen that I can hide certain individuals on the web version so might do that. Sue

Sorry, I keep having to do 'proper' work, trying to catch up on the weeks correspondence and invoicing. Mine is really simple, I click on the Internet options, update or edit my home page and off it goes. Then I get a confirmation that it has been uploaded and a whole list of contacts asking me if I want FT to send them notification of the update. The first time I did it was a pain because my old firewall wouldnt allow export. I used to have to disable it for the upload - I now have sygate and its not a prob. Yes, do email them, when I wanted to work out how to make my site a bit more attractive I had mails back and forth from them trying to help me.

Laird - thanks for the internet web page suggestion. The only problem there is that in this FTM one, I've gone down to more recent times - in my immediate family at least and put loads of details in that I don't really want to be available to everyone on the WWW. This FTM tree is therefore very different from the more basic version I feel is safe to put on GR for example. It's a part of FTM I hadn't tried yet so may have to amend my trees and use that route. Hi - does your page have these options (laid out a bit more cosmetically !) ? Family Trees You can publish a tree to your home page from Family Tree Maker Web Edition. Just open the tree, then click the Share menu and choose 'Publish to My Home Page.' View my existing trees Create a new tree Other options: Edit the text in the 'Family Trees' section on my home page. Add a new tree by uploading a GEDCOM file. Remove a tree from my home page. ---------------------------------------------------- Been tinkering with it, and you are right - its pretty messed up, doesnt seem to recognise that I have a tree, even tho I was in my home page to start the edit !

Like Laird, Ive uploaded all mine to the family web page. Its so easy, even for a thicko like me, just a matter of clicking next a lot. Ive got lots of photos and info on there and if any of the family ask me about something, I just give them the url to have a look at, its so much easier than trying to look at GR.

another way to share is to upload into a webpage - again FTM2005 automates this for you - click the INTERNET menu option. Have a look at mine if you like - it took 5 mins to do ! http://familytreemaker.genealogy.*com/users/d/a/v/Laird-G-Davison/

sounds like something is corrupted Susan .... try browsing one of their forums for similar symptoms... you will have to go to the web page I've pasted some text from for the actual links. You get the page by clicking HELP in FTM2005 and selecting Tech Support or Online help Family Tree Maker Help Tools Family Tree Maker’s Knowledge Base Get free assistance 24 hours a day by searching our knowledge base or asking our technical support group a question. Jim Yes done that as well. Thanks Sue

Sorry - had to go and do other things. Wasn't sure the first time whether you actually meant export as a pdf from the backup file. But have now done that and the same thing happens. It looks as though it has worked but even if I give it a few minutes before trying to close the file, it just hangs and says the software is not responding. Sue

Unknown Report 27 Feb 2005 13:06

Sue, I know it's basic, but have you given the PDF file a name and deleted the asterisk before trying to save it? Jim

Unknown Report 27 Feb 2005 12:54

So did you try USING the backup file ? Generating a PDF from it rather than the current file ? Another way to send the tree - if your friends have a compatible PC FT type program - is to export it as a Ged file - attach that to an email and let them load it on their PC. They could then play with trees and reports too.

Yes the auto back up seems to be working so I'm not losing any data thank goodness. Just can't make a pdf of the file and don't know how else to send it to my family. Thanks Sue

Unknown Report 27 Feb 2005 12:28

well, its a megabyte plus, but Adobe should be OK to handle it. (mines 1612kb) .... the actual PDF files never seem bigger than about 60K ... Have you got auto-backup running ? Look for a file same name as tree but suffixed FBK ...... try opening it if its recent, and then exporting from it. If it works, restore via File or Edit menu - you may have to add last updates since last backup ... Hope this helps ..

Well, I can't find the file size of the tree itself but the file including the data for that branch of the family is only 1,079Kb which isn't that big. Sue G
