Hi, just wondered, I have found my nephews on Ancestryin Births, they are living, does anyone know if permission is needed to add them,as permission hasn't been sought. I have looked for myself and other living family members with no luck. AL

When you say on Ancestry, do you mean the births, marriages and deaths index? If so, then they are all on 1837online as well, as that goes up to 2003

Ann-Marie Report 24 Apr 2005 20:41

Yeah that's what I mean Carol, I was just messing about seeing how many Joe Bloggs and Henry Cloggs(not really but not putting real names I was looking for) there were cos names aren't common and I found my nephews. AL

Probably because these are simply indices whereas on a family tree actual dates and family relationships are given. Dont forget that all these indices are easily found on fiche at libraries and family history centres and in big books in London.

ok having found my boys entries on there, I want to know..... Could i simply apply for their certs???from GRO???and can anyone apply for them?????? And just to confuse the issue... all three boys were re-registered in 2002 (ancestry only go up to 2000) and i was told at the time if they applied for their brith certs in the furture, then even thought they would give in their date of births, the register would direct the searcher to the amended entry. BUT the orginal entries are on Ancestry.????? Shelli P.s. if anyone can apply for their certs in their orginal surname does that leave them open to being fraudlently used???

If its in the last 50 years do you not have to give exact date for certificates.

Shelli4 Report 24 Apr 2005 21:00

i thought so with death cert but not having to order a birth cert that is less than 50yrs old i have no idea...... althought when i ordered my own years ago, i vaguely recall being asked my mothers maiden name, but as that is part of the index surely that can't be the security????

Hi Shelli We recently needed to get a copy of our eldest's birth cert for him to get a passport. We obtained it from the local office but we had to provide his full name, actual date of birth, the names of both parents and the addresses we were living at when the birth was registered! Lou

Shelli4

Shelli4 Report 24 Apr 2005 21:07

Thanks Lou was getting a bit concerned as in theory anyone could get a copy of the boys orginal birth certs and become them, as they no longer exsist... does that make sense???? just glad the boys are all aware they have had two surnames can you imagine in years to come, them trying to get a birth cert with their current name but their DOB. Their new entries are 5 1/2 and 3 1/2 yrs after their births LOL talk about confusing LOL

Hi Shelli No, I agree, it is worrying especially cos identity theft seems to be on the increase. I'd hate to think of anyone being able to get a copy of my children's certificates and use them fraudulently Lou

Shelli4 Report 24 Apr 2005 21:15

Lou would love to test the system by appling for the boys certs but using their old names and correct date of birth ... just to see what happens, but can't justify the cost :-(((

I asked my sister if she could get a copy of my birth cert as I am trying to get a passport, she said she couldn't even though she knows all my deatails. AL

I felt really old when I found my marriage on Ancestry the other day! Having recent experience of this, I can confirm that if you apply for a birth certificate from less than 50 years ago, you have to supply ALL details - including mother's maiden name etc, etc. I also check CRB applications before they go off to our LEA, and I know that a birth certificate that is issued more than a year after the event will NOT be accepted as proof of identity. However, I don't know if this applies anywhere else, eg passport office etc. Mandy :)

Shelli4 Report 24 Apr 2005 21:53

Mandy this was a a while ago but when we applied for passports, mine went thru ok as the copy birth cert was an old copy (not orginal) but hubbys appplication was double checked, by them calling his referance to check he was who he said he was. As his copy was only a couple of days old, brought esp for the application. I just think the system is open to fraud thats all!!!

I find it odd as well that you have to ask permission to put any living persons name on this site when you can find there details on 1837 etc. You have to use your discretion when passing any info on to a potential rellie and when allowing them to view your tree. I only allow access when I am happy with the connection and then that person can only get the same info that they could if they looked it up on other sites.

I got my own birth certificate from GRO online with just the index number and district.

JG70 Report 24 Apr 2005 22:03

These things have always been open to the public at the GRO. Remember in 'The day of the Jackal' how the baddie visited a graveyard and then went to the GRO to get a birth cert and thus create a false ID. Jacquie

Ann-marie, The answer is a big YES you do need a living persons permission, you cant make public any personal information about them unless you have consent,, But you can add their name just omit any dob ,,its called everyones right to Data Protection. If you ring up libaray and ask for name of such a person living at such address from electoral books, they will either confirm that ,surmanes appears at that address but if not they wont tell you who does, but you can walk into libaray and look yourself<< crazy or what.. kay.

Ann-Marie

Ann-Marie Report 24 Apr 2005 22:46

So, Kay, does that mean my nephews full names with year of birth and quarter with mother's maiden name and where registered is allowed on ancestry without permission?? The full DOB isn't available. AL

Pippa Report 24 Apr 2005 22:59

Ok so now I am confused and realise that I have no hope of tracing my relatives. I looked on ancestry to be nosey and there is my little boy on the index with the wrong surname! I know it's him as he is indexed with my maiden name and I have the original certificate in my cupboard downstairs. If they can get it wrong in the last 7 years what hope do we have? Pippa
