Help? I am trying to find the marriage of my Grandmother and Grandfather but I have no idea where in the country they married. Their names are Harry Shaw and Muriel Hendrie the date of marriage is 15/05/1941, I have no idea where to start, Muriel married firstly in 1933 but some time after divorced. That was in West Derby. Any ideas?

Lisa 1837 site is the best bet, I have a few spare credits to help if you want. After 1911 they started to show the spouses surnames on marriage index so to help: Is Hendrie her maiden name or married (1st marriage) name? If its her maiden name, do you know when she married first, or even better her 1st spouses surname? The good thing about weddings is that they get registered straight away (as far as I know) so the second marriage would have been registed QE June 1941 which narrows the search down a lot. If you managed to get their 2nd wedding certificate it'll give you her father's name, occupation and also it'll give you her age so you can go about finding her birth certificate. Rachel

If you wouldn't mind looking that would be great. Her first husband was Christopher C Russell they married in 1933 in West Derby. Hendrie is Muriels maiden name.

Lisa I can't find the 2nd marriage under either her maiden or married name but I can find her 1st. QE Jun 1933, Muriel Hendrie & Christopher C Russell, W Derby, Vol 8b, Page 627. If you ordered the cetificate (£7) it would give you her age, fathers name, her & her fathers occupation, etc. Then you get back to her birth certificate. Where did you get the 2nd marriage date from? Rachel

Hi Rachel, the marriage date comes from a family bible, it has to be out there somewhere, just wanted to say thanks very much for looking I really appreciate it.

Lisa If you can, I'd ask anyone in the family who might know, your parents or aunts, uncles, etc just to verify the date. The date might have been written wrong accidently. Information given by family isn't always as accurate as they think it is! My mum always believed her gran was born in Scotland so I was trawling the Scottish sites forever when I gave up and then found her born in Manchester. Her mother was from Aberdeen but she'd actually been born in Lancashire! Good luck with it Rachel

Sorry to keep posting but.... did they marry in England or Scotland or elsewhere maybe. The 1837 site only shows marriages in England and Wales and it's just that Hendrie sounds Scottish. Do you by any chance know where they lived in the 1940's? Finding the birth of their first child might help, my grandparents married in Nov 1946 and my dad was born Apr 1947! Shotgun weddings happened a lot back then and so there might not be a great deal of time passing between their marriage and their first child.

Hi Rachel, Thanks again for looking, maybe you are right and they were not married, mmm think I am going to have to try a different avenue. Lisa

Cripes don't apologise, I think our last messages crossed, Hendrie is Scottish. Muriels Grandad was from there, then the family moved to Liverpool, well Toxteth Park, she was one of three girls and had a brother as well. Harry Shaws family are from the same area. I know my grandparents moved around due to work, although they never went back to Scotland. Lisa

Lisa Have search 1940/1941/1942/1947 for Harry Shaw/Muriel Hendrie/Muriel Russell and there is nothing coming up at all. They either didn't marry, or the names you have are their nicknames and not their birth names. Victor

Tin Fields Report 4 Jun 2005 18:07

Hi Victor, There is absolutely no doubt where their names are concerned so I think maybe they didn't marry. Just being curious, would you know how likely it is that maybe Muriel didn't divorce? I'm not sure how common/ easy it was in the mid 30's Thanks for looking for me though! Lisa

Rachel

Rachel Report 4 Jun 2005 18:22

Maybe her 1st husband died in the war? That was common too. Divorce generally cost too much money for people. One of my ancestors lived apart for 20 years, neither remarried but they didn'y get divorced either.

Hi Rachel, good grief I never thought of that, I was always lead to believe they married, parted and no children were born, it didn't once occur to me.... Lisa
