Have you only found him in 1901 - not on any other census or do you have his marriage cert with his age?

Registration of births wasn't compulsory until 1875. Have you found him on an earlier census with brothers and sisters?

just found him in the workhouse in 1871 and 1881 - poor boy, it may be that he was 'dumped' at the workhouse by his mother - you could try and find a baptism for him...

thanks for the help, ( going dizzy with looking) so just to recap how do i now find his fathers name etc. from marriage certs?

Right said Fred

Right said Fred Report 23 Jul 2006 23:51

I would definately buy the marriage cert, but from the looks of it, it looks as though he may be a foundlung, so may not know who his father was or he may just make one up, you need to buy the marriage cert and then go from there.

All the census have a heading for disability - it doesnt mean he was disabled unless the enumerator enters something in that column like Blind or something. Im afraid I dont think that is the right marriage Tom - its in Sheffield for one thing and it is 5 years after the birth of the first child. Id look a bit earlier I think probably around 1879. I think you could do well to take out an ancestry sub and look for the family through 1901 back to 1841. The marriage certificate can be bought for £7 from the GRO online website - it will give the fathers names and occupations of both bride and groom, the couples ages, where they were living at time of marriage and the witness names which are often good clues. You can then look for this Freds birth certificate which will give dad and mums names and work backwards from that info.
