I am trying to verify the marriage of Betsy Ann Jameson born 1841. (before buying the cert) One possible is 8b Page 649 3rd quater 1859, Elijah Hulse. I think it is the right one as on the 1871c RG10 3914 it has a Betsy Ann Hulse living with her sister Fanny. The husband is not named it says shes Married to a Policeman. Is this usual not to name policemen. How can I find this policemans name? Many Thanks Denise.

If you mean the husband is not named on the census, thats probably because he wasn't home on census night. Caqn you find him on a later census with Betsy? Sam x

I should think it more likely that hubby was on duty at police station or plodding the beat and and so wasn't listed at home but that she gave the information about his occupation to explain that she wasn't usually the head of the household. Have you searched for his name on the census?

presume this is the one Marriages Sep 1859 Hulse Elijah W.Derby 8b 674 Jamieson Betsey Ann W. Derby 8b 674 and the 1861 census Betsy Ann Hulse abt 1841 Hartford, Cheshire, England Wife Over Cheshire Rhoda Emily Hulse abt 1861 Over, Cheshire, England Daughter Over Cheshire - certainly looks feasible

?? Flatmans wife Flatman / Floatman = Boatman on a flat bottom boat (a flat) used in shallow waters (mainly rivers and canals) for transport. The term also came to refer to shallow-draft coastal sailing vessels - so maybe he was on the boat on census night ??

Could Elijah have told Betsy he was a flatman/policeman to cover up his absence at nights? There's an Elijah Hulse of about the right age living with 'wife' Martha and family in Over, Cheshire in 1881 and in Wharton Cheshire in 1861. Update - he's also in Over in 1871 with Martha. Mistranscribed as Eliza Hulse, aged 37, occupation ship carpenter.

Judith, anythings possible. I'm pretty sure it is the right man. I'll have to do some more research and see what that throws up. Oh I would love a bigamist in the family. Cant find Betsy on any later census so maybe she croaked it?

Sad fact that we genealogists get excited at finding law breakers. I got a funny look or two when I expressed joy at finding my 3xgt grandfather had served a prison sentence! Have just spotted Elijah and Betsey together at last on the 1901 census. He's transcribed as Elizah again. They're in Lancashire and he's working at the colliery. RG13; Piece: 3560; Folio: 53; Page: 16 PS there's a death entry in the GRO index for Betsy Ann Hulse in 1909.
