He's still a schoolmaster for the Workhouse - on the index as John J Beckford

Looking at the 1851 image I think it gives Emma's age as 43, William 13, George 12, Samuel 9, Frances 5 and John 3.

Just realised, haven't got John in 1871 either. He didn't die until 1879 so should be somewhere to be found !!

Jeanette, Thanks for checking the 1851 image for Emma as she seemed a bit too old to have Frances and John as her children. Marie, John probably had to live in at the school - possibly permanent or at least some night. 1861 - possible as Fanny is another name for Frances Name: Fanny Beckford Age: 15 Estimated birth year: abt 1846 Relation: Servant Gender: Female Where born: Handon, Hertfordshire, England Civil parish: Ware Town: Ware County/Island: Hertfordshire Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: View image Registration district: Ware Sub-registration district: Ware ED, institution, or vessel: 3 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 5

Marie

Marie Report 8 Mar 2007 20:07

i'm confused...how could emma be 63 in 1851 ? surely she should be 50 if born 1811 same as John ?

Marie

Marie Report 8 Mar 2007 20:03

not sure about emma, all i know is that john is a widower in 1861 so it must have been before then. I'm gonna go look for a death for her now. Thankyou all very much for your help so far. xx

GlitterBaby Report 8 Mar 2007 20:01

Perhaps the family I posted for 1851 is wrong. When and where did Emma die? The ages on the 1841 census are rounded so the ages given could be out by quite a bit. Maureen

Marie

Marie Report 8 Mar 2007 19:55

does the 1851 census show who he is a servant for ? Do yous think its strange for him to go from servant to schoolmaster ?

Marie

Marie Report 8 Mar 2007 19:52

Sorry, approx year of birth is 1811 and children that I know of are william, george, samuel, frances and john.

GlitterBaby Report 8 Mar 2007 19:50

Marie, John is shown on image as school master but would probably be classed as servant as he is not head of household. Mauren
