Viv Yes, Trish is right, you must get your father's birth certificate - it may hold the clue, you never know. This is the order of things, to clarify and then work backwards. Certificates sometimes are very informative, sometimes the registrar scribbles something in the margin or the address could be a clue and you want to know how John Henry is described on the certificate. Then you can look at the other info provided on this thread. Let us know when you get your dad's birth certificate. Alison

Viv No, I am not the Alison Day from Yorkshire, I've known another with the same name too - but I'm the original! Try to reassure your dad that the answers are out there and as soon as you get past this brick wall then it should be a smoother ride. I was thinking that Henry Vincent and Sarah Ann who had John Henry in 1906 might be on the 1901 census return. I see that you have an occupation for Henry as a Warf dock labourer and the children were born Southwark. So possibilities are beginning with looking for a family of Vincents in Southwark:- In the 1901 census a John Vincent is a waterside labourer, he is married to wife Sarah aged 43, living White Hind Alley, St. Saviours, Southwark. Children Walter and George are in the same occupation and their daughter is also Sarah Vincent, aged 11. No son called Henry with the family but perhaps a connection here. Going back 10 years in the 1891 census we have a family of Vincents living St. George the Martyr at 73 Scovell Road consisting of James Vincent, solicitors clerk, 30, wife Alice 31, children James, Arthur, Thomas, Henry, Charles. Henry Vincent is 4 so would have been 19 in 1906 when John Henry Vincent was born St George the Martyr West 1906. Although I can see that 10 years later Henry has also become a solicitors clerk. Also St. Saviour, Southwark, a Henry Vincent born Camberwell is the 14 year old son of Caroline who says she is married but no husband is registered on the census. Now these are just possibilities but your grandfather and siblings were born Southwark so we are looking for Vincents in Southwark initially. On a search for Henry Beeton:- In the 1871 census we see Henry Beeton is 64 years old living with wife Lavinia and he is a WHARF FOREMAN born in Bermondsey, living Falcon Wharf, St. Saviour, Southwark. Hey now, Viv, this has got to be more than a coincidence - this has to be the correct family of Beetons. This Henry in 1881 is in the workhouse age 75, Southwark area, described as bricklayers labourer then. Now this is obviously an older Henry Beeton than the one you are looking for but nevertheless it may well be an earlier generation of Beetons. Annoyingly I can't seem to find him in the other census returns but will look again for him and other connections. Don't despair, the answers are out there. Alison

Hi Viv Have you tried find a death record for her? That might give you some clue. Try looking under all the possible surnames. My Gt Grandmother married twice but neither time to my Gt Grandfather (still don't know why) anyway, I found this out when I contacted the cemetry where i believed she was buried. They were in the same grave. Good luck Jen

Galvidon Report 20 Jul 2007 14:06

As far as i know she could have married twice or not at all as i can not find any marriages under any name from my grandfather’s cert. Sarah was a Vincent formerly Sadler I’m guessing that was her maiden name. On my grandfathers brothers cert said she was a Beeton formerly Vincent. Does that sound clear to you? My grandfather was born of the first relationship and registered as Vincent. His mother formerly Sadler then second relationship was with Henry Beeton which my grandfather at some point took the name of Beeton can not find any documents saying he did this legally or just took the name and used it. Yes i guess you are correct we are Beeton, but i want to trace my grandfather real father Henry Vincent's as well as Henry Beeton's his step father if this is the case. I'm not sure if this is any clearer to you, as i said this is confusing Best regards Viv
