Could someone advise me where I could find details of a convict sent to Austrailia in 1851. I would like to find out if he is one of our ancestors but no information is given other than his name on the www.convictrecords.au.com website.

This 684 ton ship was built in Calcutta in 1834. It was employed as a convict transport and left Portland, England on November 2, 1851 bound for the Swan River Colony. She carried the sixth of 37 shipments of male convicts destined for Western Australia. The voyage took 89 days and the Marion arrived in Fremantle on January 30, 1852 with 30 passengers and 279 convicts [Erickson]. Alex Bissett and Fred W. Le Grand were the captain and surgeon respectively.

There were no deaths recorded on the convict shipping and description lists and 279 convict numbers were assigned for the voyage ranging from (986 to 1264) although [Bateson] says 280 convicts embarked and only 279 arrived.

There were no pensioner guards on this voyage and the 30 passengers mentioned above have not been accounted for, but were possibly cabin passengers or regular soldiers. At the time the 'Perth Gazette' reported 30 sappers, 15 women & 19 children on the voyage in the company of a religious instructor named Crawley.

Hi everyone

Thanks for the message, I am looking into the Tuttiett family of Taunton and saw that three Tuttietts were sent to Australia around the 1850's on three different ships. What I am trying to find out is whether or not any of them were related to my mother in law. I am especially interested in Henry Tuttiett, tried in Taunton and then sent to Australia in 1850. Only thing is I do not know his date of birth as she knows very little of her side so I am unable to confirm if he is an ancestor.

When I've looked in the past it seems Tuttietts of Taunton have a criminal history and appear in newspaper articles going back to 1700's accused of crimes in Taunton and Stoke St Gregory area (which is where her family is from)
