My Mother in law has asked me assist her in finding out about her family tree, she was unofficially adopted at a young age and therefore is sketchy as to many details.

Her parents are both deceased; he was a Dorris victor Ford (dob unknown) and she was a June Rose Maloney born 1932 we believe in a workhouse in Highgate, London. She had a twin brother called Peter. Their Mother was an Ethel Rose Harris (dob unknown). That is all the information that she can provide me.

Can anyone please give me a few pointers as to where to begin as its been a long time since I did any of this; my mother in law would especially like to know if her mother June had any more children other than her (Jill Rose) and her sister (Janette) - where would I start with this?

Any pointers would be gratefully received!

Thanking you in advance

Laura :-)

There are twins born in 1932 in Islington, but the names don't match up with the info you have posted above.:

Births Sep 1932
Maloney James W Harris Islington 1b 247
Maloney June R Harris Islington 1b 247

It might be a good idea to buy June's birth cert: cost £9-25 from

This looks a good possibility for the marriage:

Marriages Mar 1932

Harris Ethel Maloney Pancras 1b 104
Maloney James C Harris Pancras 1b 104

If you look on freeBMD there are 4 boys who are possibly born to this couple after the twins.

June's marriage:

Marriages Sep 1954

Ford Dorris V Maloney Islington 5c 2470
Ford Victor D Maloney Islington 5c 2470
Maloney June R Ford Islington 5c 2470

Janice - this is fantastic thank you very much, much appreciated.

Its her mother June Rose Maloney married name Ford that she would like to know whether she had any more children - how do I go about this please?

Thanks

Janice

Janice Report 2 Aug 2012 14:28

You can look on FreeBMD the same as I've just done. Jill's birth seems to have been registered twice -in the first and last quarters of 1954. Presumably as the parents married after she was born, they reregistered her after they were married.

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Janette's birth is also there registered in islington but no more - however the year is quite recent for freeBMD so there could be others not transcribed yet.

Do you have Ancestry? If not, I'll look at the births there for you and see if any more show up.

Here's one of the deaths, which gives you his date of birth:

Name: Victor Dorris Ford
Birth Date: 12 Dec 1910
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1975
Age at Death: 64
Registration district: Islington
Inferred County: Greater London
Volume: 13

Thanks once again, this is excellent - I am busy ordering all the certificates for her. Thanks also for the links. I am sure that I am going to sound pretty silly here but what is Ancestry?! :-)

It's a genealogy website brilliant for BMD and census returns, WW1 records, london parish records and electoral registers amongst many other things.

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/

It's pricey if you don't do much research, but worth every penny if you do a lot. You can do a free trial fortnight (have to give card details though and remember to cancel if you don't want to continue!!)

Janice

Janice Report 2 Aug 2012 14:43

Here's the other death - do you know if that date of birth is correct?

Name: June Rose Ford
Birth Date: 3 Jun 1932
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1972
Age at Death: 40
Registration district: Enfield
Inferred County: Greater London
Volume: 5b
Page: 549

Just realised - there's a very large age difference between them isn't there? June died quite young.

Janice

Janice Report 2 Aug 2012 14:51

This one could be June's father:

Name: James C Maloney
Birth Date: abt 1906
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1965
Age at Death: 59
Registration district: St Pancras
Inferred County: London
Volume: 5d

I will have a look at that then thanks.

Mum in law did say that she was born in Sept 1932 but she is very vague on the details - I believe that she was put out as it were along with her sister at a very young age as the mother couldn't cope. She is just concerned that her mother went on to have more children and she could have siblings she doesn't know about.

You have been so helpful thanks - I will get searching with all the links you have provided.

Janice

Janice Report 2 Aug 2012 15:00

I've looked on Ancestry and I can't see any likely suspects for siblings. There are only 2 more births after Janette's, one is in Willesden but it is the next quarter after Janette. Then there is a boy the following year in Liverpool. I would think this one highly unlikely as they seem to have stayed London based.

It might be worth buying both death certs if you can afford to, so that you can see who the informants are. If there were any more children, this might lead to them.

Were the girls brought up by other family members or non-related families?

Laura

Laura Report 2 Aug 2012 15:18

They were brought up by non family members. Is that a boy born to a June Rose Ford? That is interesting as mum in law can remember her mother leaving for a long period of time and told me that she thought she may have connections "up north". She is also convinced that she can remember a little boy visiting with her mother for a short while which is why she is so keen to find out re siblings! I will purchase the death certificate thank you and once again thanks for your fantastic help.

Laura

Laura Report 2 Aug 2012 15:21

The boy was a "Bobby" btw

Janice

Janice Report 2 Aug 2012 15:29

There are some Ford MMN Maloney births in Liverpool but there's also a marriage that they are probably linked to, also in Liverpool in 1947. You can see them for yourself on FreeBMD

Search births, surname Ford, mother surname Maloney.

Do you know if Victor/Dorris and June stayed together?

EDIT - looks like they did

In 1960 they were living at 187 Junction road, Islington N19
according to the electoral register.

Laura

Laura Report 2 Aug 2012 15:43

No they separated but not sure if they divorced.

Thank you - am starting to get the hang of the searches :-)

Janice

Janice Report 2 Aug 2012 15:51

The separation must have been after 1960 then unless there's another Victor and June Ford couple!

Does your mum know anything about June's twin brother? Actually, just realised she probably doesn't as she thought his name was Peter but it's James!

Have been trying to find a Maloney family with child james in 1911 but there are a few. One of them interestingly has a pair of twin boys and is in Islington so they are my prime suspects at the moment! James and Ethel's marriage cert would give the father's name if you wanted to pursue it.
