David M E Dunbar was my Grandfather, he appeared in the 1891 Census for England as a 2 year old child, but did not appear in the 1901 Census or the 1911 Census. I know he married at 25 years. I have not be able to find anything out about him or where he might have been since he was 2 years old until he got married. |

Parents William and Annie and with several siblings in the census where you found him. Have you found the parents and siblings in other census? |

As his father was born in Scotland, could he have been staying with relatives in Scotland in 1901 and 1911? |

Sorry for that Jan, first time on this. Thanks for your help. Have tried the Scottish Census - no luck. Have Alexander Skene Dunbar on 1911 census thankyou. :-) |

As he would have been 12-13 in 1901, it's just possible he was working, maybe as a cabin boy in view of his future career? Certainly can't see him anywhere at all on any census. |

If he was a cabin boy and then trained later to become a ships steward, would there be records somewhere showing which ships he was on and when ? Would he have had a seamans passport/identity record showing when he started on a particular ship and where he went? Where could I check ? |

Found this in the Edinburgh Gazette dated 23.Sept. 1955 but there's no indication of what the entry refers to (I wonder if it's a bankruptcy notice) |

Thanks for that Sylvia, I will look into both sites. Thank you BeverleyW, I now have a copy of that page from the Edinburgh Gazette, it also appeared in the London Gazette. |

It appears that he ran a Boarding house at 79 B/C Durning Road, Liverpool, he appears to have gone into Bankruptcy in September 1955, two years prior to his death. 79 Durning Road is now a Youth Club. I have been in contact with them and they have informed me that the club opened in 1962. They are checking with some older residents that attend the club to try and find out what buildings were on the site prior to 1962. If anyone has any ideas where I can check when he took on the boarding house as this may help me to find him in the Census? |
