David M E Dunbar was my Grandfather, he appeared in the 1891 Census for England as a 2 year old child, but did not appear in the 1901 Census or the 1911 Census. I know he married at 25 years. I have not be able to find anything out about him or where he might have been since he was 2 years old until he got married.

A bit of advice on where to look next would be appreciated. :-S

Where is he 1891? And where was he born, who are his parents?

Parents William and Annie and with several siblings in the census where you found him. Have you found the parents and siblings in other census?

As his father was born in Scotland, could he have been staying with relatives in Scotland in 1901 and 1911?

'Thats all the family, he was a Mercantile Marine prior to being a ships steward when he grew up. Believe he worked on ships from Liverpool to Llandudno and Isle of Man after the 1st WW.'

Looks likely he was possibly working then, at least in1911.

Sorry for that Jan, first time on this. Thanks for your help. Have tried the Scottish Census - no luck. Have Alexander Skene Dunbar on 1911 census thankyou. :-)

As he would have been 12-13 in 1901, it's just possible he was working, maybe as a cabin boy in view of his future career? Certainly can't see him anywhere at all on any census.

If he was a cabin boy and then trained later to become a ships steward, would there be records somewhere showing which ships he was on and when ? Would he have had a seamans passport/identity record showing when he started on a particular ship and where he went? Where could I check ?

Found this in the Edinburgh Gazette dated 23.Sept. 1955 but there's no indication of what the entry refers to (I wonder if it's a bankruptcy notice)

It suggests that at some time he had dealings in Scotland again.

There are 2 Private Family trees on ancestry ................... I cannot see who else is on there, except that they have David Ernest Mitchell Dunbar


It might be worth your while to go on there, and contact the tree ownners to see if they have any more information.

Thanks for that Sylvia, I will look into both sites. Thank you BeverleyW, I now have a copy of that page from the Edinburgh Gazette, it also appeared in the London Gazette.

It appears that he ran a Boarding house at 79 B/C Durning Road, Liverpool, he appears to have gone into Bankruptcy in September 1955, two years prior to his death. 79 Durning Road is now a Youth Club. I have been in contact with them and they have informed me that the club opened in 1962. They are checking with some older residents that attend the club to try and find out what buildings were on the site prior to 1962. If anyone has any ideas where I can check when he took on the boarding house as this may help me to find him in the Census?

There's not much further info on the card. He was a 2nd steward and it was dated 30/10/1929. He may have been on a ship called the Herefordshire.

I suppose it confirms he was still a seaman then.
