We need a name and area to be able to help, Jane.

Can you post a few details for at least one of the census please?

Have you checked dates of birth either side of the expected one?
Have you checked variants of the spelling, or mis spellings?
If you are still stuck, and want someone to look for you, start a thread on 'find ancestors', giving as much info as possible.

Oh, and welcome to the boards!

HI all , Thanks for all you pointers , and too Lynski who helped me in replying !! The details of great grandad are:

Thomas William Stanley Nelson Ewen ( sometimes Ewens and the Nelson can be in surname and sometimes first name)

Born in 26 Oct 1858 Father Henry Nelson Ewen Mother Elizabeth (davies) guessing that from the 1871 census when he is stated as grandson

Married Sarah (Davies)

Died 1927

on all the census i can find he is Liverpool born and bred , his job is a ships rigger , I haven't got a clue how to find out if he may have been on a ship so any pointers on that would be great .

I have found him under him full name and Thomas WSN Ewens, and Thomas Ewens.
I have just requested his marrage certificate to come in post

Oh while i am rambling how do you find out where relatives are buried ??

Thanks again for all the help and welcomes xxx :-)

What I don't see is if he was with his grandparents on the 1871 census and their name was Davies, how can his parents be Henry Orlando Nelson Ewen and Elizabeth Southern unless she was a widow when she married Henry.

In 1861 they were probably living at 23 Moorfields Street, Liverpool, which is the address given for the burial of Edwin Ewens in 1863. In 1861 the census for 23 Moorfields Street is either lost, destroyed or not transcribed

Liverpool, Lancashire, England, Burials, 1813-1974

Name: Edwin Nelson Ewens
Birth Year: abt 1862
Age: 11/12
Burial Date: 20 Sep 1863
Parish: Walton Park

address - 23 Moorfields Street, Liverpool
