I just looked at the f t f wall on fb, and saw a posting re

www.mundia.com

with a comment from someone else:-
I find it a bit naughty that Ancestry have copied all the public trees over to the Mundia site, without telling anyone. I wonder what the thinking is behind the Mundia site!

These 2 were posted back in December

........... and the Mundia site does have the ancestry logo down at the bottom

it is apparently free or rather

"basic membershp is free. Premium membership is free during beta"

has anyone seen this, or tried it??????

from the mundia FAQS

How did you get over 1 billion profiles in your family tree network as a new site?
Mundia is connected to the Ancestry Websites and part of the Ancestry community. All of the public family trees throughout the Ancestry Websites are visible on Mundia.

I already created my family tree on another website. Why should I put my tree on Mundia also?
Mundia helps you grow your tree automatically. Unlike other websites, Mundia’s robust matching technology automatically searches more than 1 billion profiles in the world’s largest collection of family trees to provide matches that help you grow your own tree. You may see a unique green leaf on a person's profile in your tree to indicate a possible match. You can choose to accept the match and instantly merge additional data into your own tree. Mundia also helps you discover and connect with living relatives across the world.

so ALL of the public family trees on ancestry have been copied over to mundia!

I'm a bit puzzled as to why ancestry would have done this, to be honest!

I find it puzzling, too.

just becouse you have your public tree on ancestry dont meen you want it on another site

i dont think i would like this with out being ask
and another thing can you delet your tree on the mundia site
if your not happy with what ancestry have done or do thay have the right to keep it there weather you like it or not

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Mar 2011 00:43

if your tree is public on ancestry, it seems that it will have been moved to Mundia

If you delete your tree from Mundia, it seems that will ALSO delete it from ancestry

The only thing you could do would be to go to ancestry and change your tree to Private ...............

You should go to ancestry and ask whether they will remove it from Mundia because you are not happy

.......... but the way I read it is

............... they have done it, and they can do it whether we like it or not.

Beejay Report 3 Mar 2011 06:59

There was a thread about this on here sometime last year. They moved the private trees onto Mundia as well, they were still kept private (so they said) but having a suspicious nature I wasn't taking a chance and removed my tree, mainly because it was done without us being told

yes, it seems to have been around for about 5 or 6 months.

I can sign in using my ancestry name and password ........ but then I can't do anything else!

I signed up to this about a year ago, but have rarely logged in.

Just tried it now and it seems that it is little more than an alternative way of accessing your Ancestry Tree and ancestry Messages.

I don't believe any data has actually been copied, you only have the one tree, which also explains why if you delete or change it it from one site, it also deletes / changes from the other. I am due to upload a new tree to Ancestry soon, so I can test if this is true then.

However, it is worth checking that any access restrictions are the same on both sites, just in case.

Dame*Shelly*(

Dame*Shelly*("\(*o*)/") Report 3 Mar 2011 08:24

ok looks like we may have to sing up to this sit and check how trees
serpos if you are a free member its not to bad but not share i like this being a full paying member

but i still dont see the diffence from a paying member to a free member
and even if this site is apart of ancestry still dont seem right that thay can move how trees

May I suggest that people read the Frequently asked questions on the Mundia site particularly the section headed "Who can edit my family tree".

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 3 Mar 2011 11:17

Having done a bit more digging, it would appear that my comment about there only being one tree is correct. Nothing has been copied, Mundia being alternative means of access.

This is the relevant para from Mundia:-

"If I make a change to my family tree on Mundia, will it also change my family tree on the Ancestry Websites?

Your family tree on Mundia is the same family tree you use on the Ancestry Websites. Any changes you make to your tree on Mundia will be reflected on the Ancestry Websites, and vice versa."

wisechild

wisechild Report 3 Mar 2011 13:42

As a matter of courtesy it would have been nice if Ancestry had taken the trouble to advise their PAYING members that this was going to happen & given them the option of removing their tree.
Marion

InspectorGreenPen Report 3 Mar 2011 14:03

You are absolutely right, Marion, it wasn't well publicised.

However, your do to have to make a conscious decision to register onto Mundia, so it isn't as though Ancestry have done it for you behind your back. I think the problem is more a case that people didn't fully appreciate what Mundia was about especially about as it provides not just you, but potentially others too, a portal into your Ancestry tree.

SylviaInCanada Report 14 Aug 2011 00:33

I've just gone back to this site, as a result of a question being asked on ancestry wall on fb re tree information appearing on someone else's tree when the person thought her tree on ancestry was private

This time, I managed to sign in and see my tree.

It is there in its entirety, even though my tree on ancestry has been private for a couple of year s........ ie, pre-dating when mundia was apparently set up.

Not a happy bunny!

ADDED:- ........ I have gone into My Account on Mundia, and deactivated it, making my profile not searchable, and my trees hidden.

I hope that works!!

Gai

Gai Report 14 Aug 2011 09:25

I can't believe that if you tree is private on one site why it should show up on a sister site.

I'm about to do the same and try to deactivate my account.

So annoying.

RutlandBelle

RutlandBelle Report 14 Aug 2011 09:55

I de-activated my account/tree etc on Mundia months ago when this first was brought to our attention. I have just been back to check and it is still de-activated and so my tree remains Private on Ancestry main site only
