i have checked the Christian names on the Robsons from 1837 to 1841 and even then there is no sign, i also thought John may not be his 1st name, it sure is a mystery that has gone on for my 11 years Research.

Bit of lateral thinking here.
My brother had the same name as my dad - after which my dad was known by his second name - even on censuses.
Perhaps, in this situation, John Jr was known by his second name.

Another scenario -
It took me 2 years to find my g grandfather's birth.
He was Sidney on my grand birth cert, on his marriage cert , on his death cert - even on his tombstone.
He was born in 1888. Couldn't find him on the 1891 census. On the 1901 and 1911 census he was Sidney.

He had 3 brothers and 1 sister.
Tried looking up his brothers' births - no luck. I though this a bit odd - apparently 4 children hadn't been registered.
Looked up his younger sister (who brought up my gran from the age of 2) - Found her birth.
Then spent ages trawling Births for the year my ggrandfather was born - unfortunately his surname was very common and i gave up.
Then I ignored him and looked up his sister.
Found her on the 1891 census - she had 4 brothers - Ivan, Sylvanus and Gifford!
On the 1901 census she had 3 brothers, Frederick, Ernest and Sidney - all born in the same place(s) in Cornwall as Ivan Sylvanus and Gifford, parents with the same names, jobs, same places of birth etc!
Took a gamble and got a birth cert for Gifford - he was my grandfather.

Sooo, as soon as they could, these three brothers abandoned their unusual an easy to find names for more common-place names!!!
G grandad took the name Sidney and was Sidney ever after!

when John got married he said his father was John Robson, Joiner, John snr did not leave a will when he died in 1862, the grandparents were were living nearby in 1840 when John was born he was the 6th child born to this family, i have checked the baptism records for the whole area no sign of John.

I think when I read 1851 census he was an engine wright.

Were the children's grandparents still alive?
I have seen records where parents took a child back to grandparents' area for baptism.

I think I've trawled all surrounding parishes near the stated Beaulieu Hampshire birthplace of my Henry.
There are trees on Ancestry which have linked him to parents, but I would like to see a bit of evidence.
No one replies when I've asked......

Did young John name John as his father, when he married?
Did John senior leave a Will naming his children?
...Not what you are searching for, but it would all help the case of parentage.

John Robsons parents were Married in Lamesley in Nov 1826
yes they were the parents of the older children on the 1841 Census i have the baptisms.
regarding your dilema, have you checked all the possibilities?

Have you checked for birth registrations without a first name, ie "Male"?

When did John and Eleanor marry?
Were they together the definite parents of the older children in the 1841 census?

Could it have been a 2nd marriage for one of them and young John was perhaps born / registered as URWIN ?

I understand your dilema.
I've been hunting for the parents of my GG grandfather for about 15 years !

it is a thought, he was a Seaman in the Mercgant service so whether he would have to be Baptised to go to Sea, i dont know.

Have you looked for a baptism close to the time when he might have started work OR just before he got married??


Many children who were not baptized as babies were baptised at one or other of the later times


a) because the employer was insistent that his workers be baptized

or

b) because the vicar wouldn't marry a couple unless both were baptized.

John senior was a Joiner and altho not on on the 1841 census living with his family he was nearby as he fathered Margaret born Oct 1841 at Hetton.

John Robson 1861 census
23 Sussex st
John Robson aged 23 Seaman born Bishopwearmouth
Eleanor age 26 Born Sunderland
Douglas age 3 months born Sunderland.
John Robson married Eleanor Ann Hall Jan 15th 1860 in Sunderland, he lied about his age as he was born in 1840 according to the 1840 and 1851 census.
John died in May 1865 as a result of an Accident his death cert says he was aged 26, the parish records say he was 25, as you say its a tough one.

Unfortunately, not everyone was registered - in one particular part of my family, most children were registered, but one wasn't; in another part of my family, most children were baptised C of E, but the last one was baptised in a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel.

Where was John senior in 1841 and when and where did John 1840 die?

The people with John Parkinson Robson have him married to Eleanor Ann Hall born @ 1831 and say John P Robson born @ 1837!! Bishopwearmouth.

I can't see anywhere any other record of a John Parkinson Robson.

Mind you they also say he died 1865 and was the father of William born 1870 in Hartlepool,soooooooo.

Yes Mary thats him, the family were Church of England as far as i know, the Baptism of Douglas was St NIcholas Church in Newcastle.

Christened Saint Nicholas Newcastle upon Tyne 28/10/1835 by John and Eleanor.

Was This also same church Saint Nicholas Parish Reg and Nonconformist.
I was just wondering if they were nonconformists,no relevance either way,I was just wondering why some of children baptised and others not.

Its Certainly an odd one, I have all the baptisms of the other children except him and Margaret Altho she is Registered, Armstrong & Richard were Baptised together on 8th July 1846 AT ST Nicholas, Hetton, so why werent John and Margaret baptised at the same time?, also were they lived in Hetton was a 5 mins walk to the Church.
