I'm trying to track down my own mother, and I believe I know which town/city she was in (Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire) in 2008. Is there an easy and preferably free (as I'm on a limited budget) way to find her? I haven't seen her since 1976, when I was 3 years old, and to be this close to finding her, but stuck, is frustrating.

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice...

Have you tried the search trees on here to see if anyone has her?

Hi

I did a similar thing a few years ago, I knew where she was living but still couldn't find her, I narrowed down that search and remembered that I had an uncle and knew roughly where he was living. Men are easier to find cause they don't change their names. Write down everything you remember ie members of the family, particularly any male relatives from her side and try to narrow down your search that way. If you know what her surname is then great, you can search for her on the electoral roles.

I hope this helps Nicola

Thanks Jax, yes, I've tried all of those

Thanks Rose, I've sent a electoral roll lookup request to Jean Brown. Hopefully this will give me an address.

Thanks Nicola, I did a BMD search and found that she remarried in 1983, and had a son in October 1984, I have the name of her husband and son, and so her new married name. Her son has a GenesReunited account, and I've sent several PMs over the last 5-6 years , but they are all still 'unread'.

She walked out on my Dad in '76/'77 when I was about 3-4 years old (and my sister was 1-2 years old), and my Dad bought us up. My Dad doesn't like to talk about her, and there has been no contact since then.

Obviously I don't want to put too many details on the public forums, but would be happy to provide all the information I have in a PM to anyone who thinks they can help.

Your welcome, sorry I can't be of more help....Your circumstances very much echo mine, down to the same year she left when I was a year old.

I hope you find what you are looking for and if you need any help then I will try if I can.

I know it will cost , but Salvation Army offers a tracing service - look on line.

If you go to the trying to find board, Wayne Tracey offers to do electoral roll look ups - also Jean on Records office offers to do look ups. Just click on their names and send them a message with the details you have.
Good luck,
Liz

Thanks Chris, I had looked at the Salvation Army, but wanna see if I can do it for free before resorting to handing out much-needed cash.

Thanks Liz, Jean did a search for me earlier today, but nothing showed up :(
Is it worth trying Wayne Tracey too, or do they just use the same lists?

I think Jean only has up to 2009, WayneTracey has 2010.

Stefan,

Looks like there was another son born 1989. Will PM the details.

Stefan,

Just a thought, but do be careful contacting your half-siblings. Could be they don't know about you.

Joan Allen, who frequents this site, run myfolks.net and I know she recommends using a third party to contact missing relatives.

It's crucial that initial contact is handled carefully.

Thanks Madmeg, I've now sent a request to Tracey.

Thanks for the awesome info, Rose. Yeah, I realise that first contact could be tricky, especially due to the circumstances of her leaving my Dad. I was planning on written contact first, if possible, then waiting to see if she replies. I'd rather contact my Mum than my half-brothers if at all possible, as my half-brothers may be unaware of my existence.

If your messages have not been opened it is more than likely that his email address has changed

Stefan,

Was Jean able to help you? On 192.com your mother is only listed the years 2002-04 and 2008, but Jean can only help with 2009.

Tracey provided me with an address, and I've just been to Stoke-on-Trent to hand-deliver a carefully worded neutral letter containing my phone number and email address.

We'll see what happens (if anything)...

Thanks sooooo much to everyone who helped me with this search!

Good Luck; I have a similar situation looking for my half brother (my dad sowed his seeds elsewhere).... and I'm an only child so the thought of a half sibling is gr8 news.

Keep us all updated.
