I have been told to try and start my computer in safe mode as a disc isn't running when it should, I have been given the following instuctions below. Is this safe and is it difficult to do, so how do I highlite the area requested?

Please try the following method to get into Safe Mode:-

Restart the PC. As soon as it turns on, immediately press the F8 key as fast as you can repeatedly (do not hold it down).

You should come to a menu where one of the options will say 'Windows Safe Mode'. Highlight this option using the arrow keys and press ENTER.

Press ENTER again if necessary on the next screen. Wait for Windows to load up in Safe Mode and try re-installing again.

Once installation is complete, restart the PC and Windows should load as normal.

Thanks fudge.

There isn't anything wrong with my laptop as far as I know it was just I was trying to load a Family Tree genealogy disc I bought and it wouldn't load, there was a help e-mail address on the cover of the disc to contact them if you had any problems, I did and this was the reply I got from them in an e-mail.

Not sure which ARROW key you use to highlite it?

Hi MGHS,

Yes pouring down in Dundee too.

I sent this company an e-mail to say I was on Vista and not Windows XP and would this also work on Vista here is their reply which I have copied and pasted.

It would be the same instructions as for Windows XP. It does not mean your computer is not safe, this is just a way around the installation problems you are having.

Hi again MGHS,

How can you run your anti virus in safe mode? I use AVG free edition anty virus but I didn't know you can run it in safe mode or even how to do that.

that HUGE UGLY screen is normal for SAFE mode.

safe mode is a stage BEFORE all your normal processes have started up.
so any scans will run faster and more thoroughly.
.
just a point if you are running a viruscan, bear in mind that systems from ME onwards have a restore folder,
this can harbour virus's etc. that wont be detected.

you have to disable the restore function, and then re enable it afterwards..

A disadvantage of doing that is that you will likely lose all previous restore points

Hi Bob,

Oh you are very technical!!! I am not much good with technical stuff, just don't understand it!! Too technical for me!

I don't have clue what all this that you said means:-
systems from ME onwards have a restore folder,
this can harbour virus's etc. that wont be detected.

you have to disable the restore function, and then re enable it afterwards..

A disadvantage of doing that is that you will likely lose all previous restore points

Ah Shelly,

Really nice of you to try and help but I am not that good on computer things and I think this is way beyond my computer knowledge and I don't want to do something wrong and make my laptop go haywire if you know what I mean. I can live without installing the disc but can't live without my laptop if you know what I mean.
