David Report 14 Jul 2008 21:21

Enhglish husband and wife have three children between 1843 and 1849 in Shoreditch.

We've got their marriage cert and the birth certs for three children. BUT, none of the five is found in 1851 census. In fact husband and wife are never seen again and it is 1881 before we are confident that the children have turned up as adults. leading normal-ish North London lives. Curious that they all turn up around the same time, eh?

Any suggestions on where to search othet than BD&M and English census records. please?

Have you tried all variants of the name as they are often mis spelt or transcribed?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 15 Jul 2008 05:51

Put the names up on here, and see if anyone can tace them

as Jacqueline said, there are loads of mistranscriptions, and mis-spellings on the actual census .... often the more information you put in, the fewer results you get.

PollyS Report 15 Jul 2008 08:15

There was a relative that disappeared in my tree. The next census his wife and 3 children were missing too.

It wasn't until one of their Australian descendant contacted my cousin for information that the mystery was resolved. Husband had been convicted of larceny and transported to Perth as punishment. His wife and children eventually followed and they settled there.

There is a website that you can go on to look up transported convicts to Perth but I can't remember what it is off the top of my head and I'm off to work now. I'll get my stuff out later.

Is that the right spelling Enhglish??

David Report 15 Jul 2008 09:41

Thanks all for your suggestions. None of these has worked in the past. Any other ideas, please?

For example, if the whole family went across borders to Scotland or Ireland around the time of the 1851 Census could we be sure of finding them, do you think?

ChristineinPortugal

ChristineinPortugal Report 15 Jul 2008 10:12

You should be able to find them if they were in Scotland.

If you post the names maybe someone else can find them.

LOL, David sent me a pm saying its a typo error - (I was thinking what an unusual name!) well, just shows you have easy it is to get things mistranscribed on records doesnt it.

David

May I suggest that you post their names on here and see if anyone can help you??

You have sent the name to me .... but I think it would be good if everyone could see the names.

I know you said that members of the family name group have not been able to find them ...... but there are some wonderful miracle workrs on here!!

There have been occasions when people were given the wrong name by the census taker ... or by the transciber ......... and helpers working together on here have been able to determine that this is why a family has disappeared

The remarriage of Sarah Shadbolt could be the reason why you couldn't find her on the censuses.

Had a pm from David

David Shadbolt and he married Sarah Biddey / Biddy from Putney in 1843.

In 1841 he was an Ag. Lab. in Chelsea and Sarah was a servant in Chelsea.
On the 1843 marriage cert it shows him as a COWKEEPER and her as a servant.
