I have been having trouble finding some of my ancestors due to misinterpretaion of censuses. To make matters worse, I recently found that an entry on Ancestry was indexed differently to GR (I don't have an Ancestry account but have unlimited searches in GR).

I am trying to find Jabob Reuben Theobald from Thorndon, Suffolk in the 1901 census. He was listed as Reuben (Ruben) in the 1891 census.

Could someone please help me by offering suggested spellings for the name Theobald (with a Suffolk accent)

I see what you mean..i have tried everything even just doing their sons name

Did he marry? If so, what was his wife's name and when did he marry?

Did he have children? Any names/dates for those?

Or

Have you looked for a death cert?

Something doesn't add up here.
On the 91 census Reuben Theobald and wife Anna are lodgers living with George Lovett. There's a grandson Harry Theobald with them. He can't be Rueben's grandson so must be George Lovett's. Does that mean Anna was a Lovett and Harry is a son of Reuben & Anna?

I was just looking for a Lovett/Theobolds marriage and can't see one

Also that would make Jacob 16 when Harry was born

This is also ringing bells with me, so think i might of tried to help before

I can't find a marriage for him and I can't find a death in WW1. I haven't found him on passenger lists either.

I was wondering if the spelling was transcribed differently on GR again.

Earlier this week I found DEE* transcribed by Ancestry as DERR^ and GR had it as DEI* (The writing was quite bad though and GR have corrected their entry).

I am worried that the same misinterpretation has happened here

I think Jacob reuben and Anna are brother and sister, not husband and wife,

Having looked at 1891 - If George Lovett is Harry's grandfather then one of his sons is Harry's father - and not married to Anna ... Or am I making assumptions here?

Cannot even find Harry in 1901 .

I have tried just putting in Thorndon, Suffolk as birthplace and then trying relevant range of years for birth - but nothing pings out of the page at me.

My assumption of this is (and it's only a guess!!)

I have Jacob's bc and his mother was Mary Ann Theobald - no father.

I don't have Anna's bc but I have Harry's and he is Anna's son - no father.

Mary Ann Theobald was the housekeeper (and maybe more!!) for George Lovett.

If George Lovett was Anna and Jacob's father that would explain why Harry is listed as Georges grandson and why both Jacob and Anna (and Harry) are living with George Lovett after their mother's (Mary Ann) death in 1881.

Does this sound possible?

Oh yes, I should have checked that. Both Reuben and Anna were single in 1891. I'm slapping my wrist!

Yes, your assumption sounds very plausible to me. Still doesn't explain, though, where they all are in 1901.

I think that's a very plausible assumption too.

So if Ann and Harry are around in 1901 - then it's only Jacob Reuben that's missing?

He could have taken "his father's name" of Lovett ...
