but John F Dunn married this annie in scotland in 1891

and John divorced eliza in 1893

so it looks like John Dunn went first then she divorced him or am I getting muddled?

Flip

Flip Report 26 Feb 2011 12:25

He divorced her - siting adultery with William Gill (Gee), so it could be worth having a look at the records held by National Archives - could give dates and more details.

Not sure what to think of his 1891 marriage in Scotland though?

leesle Report 26 Feb 2011 12:27

the scotland one is the right name, the right age and even is profession which is not a common one.

I will buy mables birth cert, it should be interesting,

dont know whether to say poor John or poor Eliza at the moment, but will say thankyou everyone

leesle Report 26 Feb 2011 12:36

sorry the scottish marriage is on the 1891 census the lady was from aberdeenshire think its on previous page.

good research and hard work everyone but much appreciated

Flip

Flip Report 26 Feb 2011 12:38

So you haven't actually found a marriage for them in Scotland?

leesle

leesle Report 26 Feb 2011 12:45

flip no its just on the 1891 census him saying he is married and living with this woman who says married.

theres no one else living there, maybe we should check

Flip

Flip Report 26 Feb 2011 12:46

Don't think they would have actually been married - just saving face!

Have you tried to find Eliza & family on 1911 census?

leesle

leesle Report 26 Feb 2011 12:49

no I havent flip, she married william Gee in 1899 so she should be with him, and the other children she had, cant remember their years of birth, but they were Richard Gee, Harry Gee, and Percy Gee, I think.

william and eliza did stay together till the end.

didnt occur to me the scotlands one may have just been saving face.

thought you'd actually found a marriage in Scotland !

leesle

leesle Report 26 Feb 2011 13:09

thanks for that 1911 census, yes thats them, my husbands grandad was percy gee.

you can see the confusion with the children , some being dunn and some being gee and yet their years of birth.

two had died?? wonder if she has just written off elsie may?

I know this is taking up so much of your time, but we do appreciate it

John Gee
Age 22
Estimated Year of Birth 1869
Relationship to Head of Household Servant
Occupation Farm Servant
Address Farm House, South Street
District Driffield, Bainton
Parish Middleton
Administrative County Yorkshire (East Riding)
Birth Place Lund

Name on original is John William Gee, so it doesn't look like he was previously married.

Note the street address - same street as Eliza & her parents in 1891 census!

leesle

leesle Report 26 Feb 2011 13:30

ah yes thanks for that, love thy neighbour.

I could be wrong, and I dont know what census it was on, but when I originally found this I thought it said mable and vernon step dau and step son. But it was years ago I found that.

I will buy their birth certs, but if John william Gee wasnt present when mable or vernon were registered it will just give a dash where father is wont it? and then I suppose we will never know for certain.

Flip

Flip Report 26 Feb 2011 13:35

It did say step-son & step-daughter on one of the census, not sure whether it was 1901 or 1911 though.

You may never know their parentage for certain, even with a birth cert. If the mother was married, she could have registered her husband as the father without his presence. Think, going by the birth dates though it was unlikely to be John Dunn though.

leesle Report 26 Feb 2011 13:39

yes I would say so.

an amazing saturday mornings journey.

thanks to everyone xxx

Flip

Flip Report 26 Feb 2011 14:03

Another thought - we are assuming William Gill mentioned in the divorce is the same person as John William Gee, could they be different people?

leesle

leesle Report 26 Feb 2011 14:16

Hi

interesting thought flip, but apparently the village consists of about eight houses, I think its still him, but to be fair to eliza her husband was never there and living with another woman at one point.

would John William Gee really call mable and vernon step children if they were his? goodness knows, when the births certs arrive we still wont know only DNA could tell us that one. thanks
