I'm stuck

nothing seems to make sense with the stories that Shelly has.

ozi

I just saw those two, and that does seem to make sense of the two birth registrations which were so very close together!

I can find no sign of a Melinda/Malinda with children Joseph and Elizabeth before she is with Cowgill in 1891

Ozi

What do you think of this one???

I was hunting for Melinda/Malinda Hocking's birth. Nothing. Then I wondered if maybe she had married a Hocking

and found this one

Marriages Mar 1877 (>99%)

Farrow Jane Haslingden 8e 200
>>>>Harris Malinda Haslingden 8e 200
>>>>HOCKING Joseph Haslingden 8e 200
Tattersall John Haslingden 8e 200

I'm getting very confused now!!

I think Shelley's family stories have become muddled into one big heap.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 26 Nov 2007 05:02

Recap of Shelly's information

Eva Hocking 1907-1980 bacup lancashire ggran ......... Birth registration found for 1909

Joseph Hocking 1880( there are 2 in the bacup area at the same age) ........ Birth registration not convincingly found

married Mary Alice Adlam 1885 in rawtenstall in 1905 .......... Marriage registration found, as AdlUm

Joseph parents are a mystery i thought she was called harriet but im not sure the story i was told off my uncle was that Joseph was born a twin the other a girl but she died as a a young girl possibly 2/3 dont know the age for sure.

........ No sign of Hocking twins being born in relevant time period

Josephs mother was called hocking and worked for a well to do family in redruth cornwall but one of the family whom she worked for got her in the family way and she was dismissed and she came to live in lancashire. i dont know if she is from cornwall or lancashire

........... Cannot find evidence of this

she went to live with josephs wife to be family ( when joe finally grew up)

........... Can't prove 'cos after 1901 so no census

when the twins was born as far as ive been told they grew up and joe married the daughter of the family they were living with.

......... Joseph not with the Adlum family in 1891 or 1901

I don't know that anything we've found can help .................... there's lots out there, but how to fit it in with the family stories?

I've just returned to it as well. It's really nagging at me!

But there is no doubt that Joseph Hocking is not living with Mary Alice Adlum and her family on any of the censuses, as Shelly's uncle implied.

I think I am about to run screaming into the night!!!

I was searching for Melinda/Malinda Harris.

Found one, and she is WIFE to Richard Harris in Norfolk, on the 1881 census (and the ONLY census in which she appears so far as I can make out).

Then I found a marriage registration for Richard Harris to Melinda Moll December 1873.

Tell me it aint so!

The other Malinda Harris I found was born ca 1856 in Somerset.

We're both going to end up in an asylum if we're not careful. No wonder Shelley's not answering. She's run for cover having been through this already.

Anna's a servant

Harriet jr is a lab in cotton mill

and Joseph is 1 mo old

and it looks more like HOcking on the image than Hacking!
