Meryl Report 6 Feb 2012 17:51

Please can anyone advise me? I am very stuck!
I am researching, in Cheshire and Lancashire and have arrived at Scottish Ancestors
I am in possession of an 1861 Barony, Glasgow census
It has Mary McLean as Head married age 40 born Dumfries no mention of a husband (who I am hoping is Peter) though… however, she has 4 children living with her 3 sons and 1 daughter.
I am hoping that the daughter is my family line..
William son age 14
ELLEN daughter age 12
Alexander son age 9
Peter son age 7
On the census, all four children are listed as born in LIVERPOOL
I have searched Birth Records on Free B.M.D but can’t find any record of them
I have searched the Lancashire B.M.D also but can not find any record of them
If the records have not been transcribed yet, what can I do? Go direct to the registrar or do you think maybe they weren’t really born in Liverpool after all? Mmm…!
Any suggestions would be appreciated Ta

Meryl

Hello Meryl, there are several options:

McLean may be spelt differently i.e. Maclean etc etc

They may not be born in Liverpool but perhaps raised there (like some of my relatives - that delayed me a bit)

Where have you searched the bmd?

(edit: sorry you said)

Oh.. an answer ha..
(not familiar with this)
I have only searched on line.. Free bmd
.and I have searched online the Lancashire site bmd

Meryl

Meryl Report 6 Feb 2012 18:08

As Head but married

Meryl Report 6 Feb 2012 18:13

Thank you for looking
Well..
it does look like him, but my ELLEN (the next child down on the census).. her Father is named on her marriage cert as Peter McLean, but I suppose they could have different fathers?

No, if it's Peter then that's probably correct.

I'll check again using Peter but I may be a little while as have to get tea

Thank you very much again for helping.. but do you know what.. you are definitely right with the census, because I have an earlier census in Liveerpool, where the two older children are listed as William John and Ellen B.. but you have helped convince me that this is not my family.. sorry :-(

Hi Meryl, it may be best to start out with what you know if definite and see if we can figure it out.

A lot of Liverpool records are online if they were from Liverpool.

Again a lot of Scottish records are online if they were from Scotland (through Scotlandspeople)

Edit: i'll delete the Liverpool baptisms so not to confuse things for now

Oh wOw Bingo! ( excitedsqueal) Yes...
I am sure that Peter was in the Scots Guards! well. that's just me.. no proof BUT, Peter McLean was my father's Gt.Gt.Grandad.
Dad always told me that his cousin got into the Scots Guards in the 2nd W.W., because his Gt.Grandparents were McLeans and there must have been a link as you had to have a connection..
I lost my Dad 6 years ago, but his brother, myUncle confirmed this for me last week also :-D

My Ellen married Alexander Rankin in Manchester Cathedral on 24th January 1870.
It gives Alexander Rankin
It states Ellen's father as Peter McLean, occupation Cutler (I wonder if with knives in the army) and Alexander's father as William Rankin, sawyer as living at 10 Broad Lane Cheetham, Manchester and Eleanor (but she signed it Ellen) as living at 148 Rydal Mount, Cheetham, Manchester
My Dad used to say his Gt.Granny came down from Scotland and went in service in Manchester and when I 'googled' 148 Rydal Mount it came up with Housemaids residence...!
I really think the army is very likely

I am sorry Dea, but I didn't know they were not mine at that point, whereas people have convinced me that they are not now, by finding them with a father, William, not a Peter :-)

Hello Meryl,

Before you dismiss them, there were a lot of McLean baptisms - I'll check to see if there are any details that match with a father called Peter. :)

Meryl

Meryl Report 6 Feb 2012 18:54

Yes Thankyou Stuart
Edinburgh Records sent me that census form as 'A possibility', BUT, as no Father is mentioned on it, I couldn't know if they were my family or not , But if the father to all those children is a William, then it's unlikely that they are my family, as Ellen's Father is named as Peter

Do you have the wedding cert? - If so, could you post ALL the details please, including witnesses - fathers, ages, occupations, addresses etc.

Thanks,
