Edinburgh Records Office couldn't find her though and I have trawled Scotland's people for a Birth record and the LDS site
it's sad I can't get further back, as my nephew has just moved to the west coast of Scotland to Lochaline, opposite Mull and Dewart Castle, where lots of McLeans originate from and I was really hoping to connect up.. Oh well.. :-(

I have that marriage Stuart off Scotland's People.. and I did wonder..! the date's right for my Ellen isn't it? but what do I do? It gives Peter as a Grinder for North British Railway on that record
How could I find out if this Peter and Mary have a child Ellen in 1849?

I don't suppose a grinder is similar to a cutler by any chance? I'm not an expert on jobs in the railway as to whether it also meant something else.

O.M.G...Stuart.,

well that looks very likely doesn't it do you all think?
AND, like I say on her Marriage cert.. her name is actually written as Eleanor, but she has signed it Ellen herself... ooo

Ellen is short for Eleanor so she may switch between the two names :)

If they were CAtholic and the eldest childwas born pre their marriage, maybe would account for not finding a Baptism - I searched 1845-1854 surname Mclean with varients, Father Peter, Mother Mary.
Could be the younger two were born Liverpool.

Sorry, new to Scotlands people - Eleanor born 9.11.1849,, baptised 1.12.1849

There is also a Mary Ann, same parents, same place for baptism born 8.9.1851 baptised 10.9.1851

Congratulations Stuart!!!

Catholic parish records are now on Scotlands people (that's why i was wondering what religion they were earlier) - I've found some of my missing ancestors on there. Looks like Stuart has found some of yours!

You must be over the moon Meryl :)

I am absolutely delighted and I thank you all very, very much for your time and patience and about 3hrs of determination..!
I wish I had come for your experience earlier, but you know what it's like, you sort of want to do it yourself, but I just had to admit defeat!!.. Thank you Stuart X but thankyou all again for all trying so hard. I really, truly appreciate it.. have got a really good lead to get back further and hopefully link up with the Duart Castle McLeans eh..?
Thankyou again

If you have access to Scotlands people you can download the images from there - instead of sending off to a Records office, you pay credits to see images of the originals as written in the church records books and you can then print/save to computer etc. An advantage over the English system. £7 for 30 credits - 1 credit to see results of searches and 5 credits to view each record (and print)

Yes, and the Marriage record says Peter is residing in No'40 Abbey Hill also..
fancy Peter being from Ireland.. I've definitely got more Irish blood in me than any other lol! and so much older than Mary, and Mary from Aberdeen eh?
Oh isn't life just wonderful when you get help to get a break through!!
I can't thak you enough!
