Hi Sandra

I searched the East Grinstead and West Hoathly registers 1780 to 1800 and there was no baptism for a William Wing and. in fact, the surname Wing did not feature at all in the baptisms in either parish during that period.

Did you consider the effect of the 1783 the Stamp Duty Act when you searched the Horsted Keynes registers?
Just in case you don't know, or for anyone reading that doesn't....

In 1783 the Stamp Duty Act levied a duty of 3d for each baptism. The levy was repealed in 1794, due to great opposition, which led to a large number of children being baptised late.

So, if you haven't already, it might be worth having another look from 1794.

Sorry it was a negative for my search but at least you know where he wasn't baptised, before, during or after the Act:-)

Good luck
Chris

Thank you for looking Chris and for you information about the 1783 Stamp Duty Act as I wasn't aware of that. Will have a look again in the Horsted Keynes baptism records 1794 onwards.

Still waiting for GRO certificates for birth Walter Wing and death of Anne Wing. Will post results once they have arrived.

Received birth cert of Walter Edward Wing and death cert of Anne Wing. Anne died on 2 April 1878 age 15 at King Edward School, St Georges Road, St Saviour (none of the parents registered her death). On the cert. her father Francis Wing is described as a groom - deceased. Interesting, as wife Frances is on her own in 1881 census, described as 'married' (widowed in 1891 census). On son Frank's 1883 wedding cert he is described as 'florist', deceased. Maybe he did end up in a lunatic asylum which the family may not have been willing to inform others about? Must order 1902 death cert of Francis Wing for possibly further clues. If he did die though in the 1870's, it must have been between Jan 1870 - Mar 1878. He would have been less then 40 years old in that case.

Any thoughts/ suggestions most welcome.

As mentioned the 1902 death cert will probably be for the Francis in the luaitic asylum...question is will there be any info on it that would point to your Francis?? You can only purchase it and hope for the best

Just received following feedback from Free BMD website:

I'm afraid that the error here is yours.

The reference that you quote is NOT what appears on the FreeBMD website.

The death of Francis Wing appears in the March quarter of 1902, not the December Quarter of 1914.

I have checked our archived transcriptions, to ensure that this isn't a recent correction, and I can confirm that this particular record has been in the database, correctly recorded as March 1902 since the middle of 2002.
