Hi Paul, Just noticed you requests for information on the Hynd Family. You mention William Hynd married to Marjory Ford. William was born in 1905 his parents were William Hynd and Elizabeth Leighton. The Hynd family were very prosperous in both shipbuilding and property. I am a member of genes reunited and details of all the Hynd family are in my tree.

Thanks, Ellen. This William Hynd is a possibility but difficulty is William junior born in 1840, which means either that it is not him, or William junior was actually born illegitimate and his mother used her dead husband's name as father to try to cover it up. Not sure if that makes sense ?

Thanks for the input Sheena. I thought about this before, but I just cannot believe that the son of a rich merchant would work as a weaver in the Hilltown. No Leighton name comes up in later progeny, though they do in (merchant) William's other children. My William Hynd married Marjory / May Ford in 1827 so the dates could fit. What do you think about the rich merchant's son versus poor weaver argument ?|!? Would appreciate your input on that. Would love to see your Hynd tree, not quite sure how to access that... will try. Really appreciate the help, Paul

Added this query, which I had entered separately earlier this week, but have been told I must consolidate it under this thread:
I cannot find on Scotland's People any birth or death records for Mary L Hynd, who was interred in Eastern Cemetery in Dundee, Angus, Scotland (in the Hynd family grave) on 30 July 1878 having died within 13 days of birth.

I have checked with Dundee Cemeteries dept and they assure me that the record is correct but I cannot understand why there is no on no record on Scotland's People. I have checked for all female Hynd's who died in 1878 but no-one whose age or name fits with Mary's age and name.

Have checked English BMD records to no avail.

Any ideas anyone ?

I am trying to find Mary's exact date of birth and death, full details of her parentage, and what the "L" stands for.

Best regards, Paul R Hynd

Paul, I think if the child was buried in Scotland then she probably died there. I wonder if the year of birth / death could have been mistranscribed from the cemetery records? I have to say though, I still think that some entries have been missed from the indexes. I have been searching for my G. Grandfather's death for over 20 years. I have a record of his burial in Glasgow but have never found his death entry on Scotlandspeople.

A quick look on SP shows that there have only been 8 female Hynd deaths in Angus aged 0 years between 1855 and 2006 - just wondering if you would be best to widen your search a little. Of course her death needed necessarily have been registered in Angus, it could be one of the neighbouring counties.

Hi Aileen ! :Yes, these are all the right people. James is my great grandfather. Marjory now lies in Lair 399 of Eastern Cemetery in Dundee, alongside 11 other Hynd family members in that lair and the adjacent Lair 398. Thanks for the input, Paul

Hi Aileen ! Yes, there are several Hynd families around at this time, so it is easy to confuse them all. I'm now going back to the James Hynd (1830-1905) family and tracing each individual of the 12 children that James and Helen Ferguson / Fergusson had, through all the censuses and addresses and marriages. Thanks, Paul

Hi rootgatherer ! Thanks for the continued valuable input. Yes, I will widen the search a bit and see if that helps. Maybe the only way to find out is to search local paper or microfiche records in Dunde, which is difficult for me as I live in the South of England and only visit there occasionally. Thanks,Paul

Hi Aileen ! the problem I have with William Hynd B 1805 is that he was from a rich merchant's family, and I don't believe that he would then be living in poverty on the Hilltown and working as a Weaver. Would appreciate your thoughts on that. thanks, Paul

loudoniii Report 9 Oct 2010 10:30

Hi Sheena ! I think when you say William Hynd born in 1905 that that was a typo and you meant 1805, when there was a William Hynd born to William Hynd and Eliza Leighton.. see my comments on that earlier. Thanks for your continued valuable input. Best wishes, Paul

Sheena /Paul.
I also have doubts as to William Hynd 1805 as that is a well to do side.James Hynd and Margaret How/Howie are both buried at the Howff Cemetery.James was a Flax Dresser, more suited to have a son in the same employment. Also a matter of 10 years difference in age at death and being born 1805.Also feel a son named William would have came before a son named James.

Ellen, here is the full text from the thread that Paul had about Mary L hynd (he's added her query here so he can delete the other thread and only have one about the family)

I cannot find on Scotland's People any birth or death records for Mary L Hynd, who was interred in Eastern Cemetery in Dundee, Angus, Scotland (in the Hynd family grave) on 30 July 1878 having died within 13 days of birth.

Hi Ellen ! Mary was interred in the Hynd family lair in Eastern Cemetery Dundee on 30 Jul 1878, having lived for only 13 days. So, assuming she was buried within max 5 days of death, that puts her date of birth as about 12 - 15 Jul 1878.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Paul

PS: I have no details of parentage, but her age suggests that she may be a daughter of James Hynd [1830-1905] and Helen Beat Ferguson [1832-1905]. Other members of the Hynd family from that time are in the same family grave.

As part of my Hynd family tree research, I've set up a Hynd family tree page on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hynd-family-tree/165841766760694?ref=ts. Any Hynds or their relatives are welcome to join.

I also learned yesterday from Sheena about an interesting book: http://openlibrary.org/works/OL2051458W/The_descendants_of_William_Hynd_(1774-1846).

I'm now trying to get hold of a copy, perhaps available from LDS Research Centres in microfiche form, as the original book is out of print, unavailable in bookstores, and not available in softcopy due to copyright reasons.

Best wishes, Paul
