Thank you ladies for all your efforts, it really is appreciated.
I think I need to get the cert of the Bullimore-Smith marriage to be sure, by all accounts Annie was quite a secretive woman. My Grandmother was never to call her mother but by her first name Annie. So she might of had a string of marriages and children and left them all. I suppose I shouldn't make a assumptions like that!

You dont need to Karen, you have Janey to do that for you!
Yes please on the 1947 marriage,at least then we will know if its her,and how old she is etc .

Do you have credit for the 1911 census, the Bullimore /Cooper one in Grantham could do with looking at to see where they were born, specially the George cooper in the household.
Or we can wait just a while longer until it goes to subs at the end of the month and then I can search it properly when I sign up.

And as I am always saying ,,,this lark dont come cheap!

I'll get the cert of the marriage Bullimore - Smith 1947. Has I'm really keen to found out if possible. I've got the same problem on my father's side, my Grandfather had a similar story, what is it with my family and mother's who abandon their offspring! I've put that ancestry on hold so I can think about this one. I have had 60 credits on the 1911 and wasted it on trying to find Fred Cooper!

JaneyCanuck Report 4 Oct 2009 23:14

Confirmation still wanted -- what was the mother's name on Dorothy's birth cert? Annie Eliza Bullimore, or some variation?

That Bullimore household with George Cooper in it in 1911, in the 1901:

Civil parish: Woolsthorpe
Registration district: Grantham
County/Island: Lincolnshire

John R Bullimore 39 (presumably John Robert)
Harriett A Bullimore 42
Ada Cooper 16 - stepdaughter of John
George W Bullimore 14
Eliza Bullimore 12
Mary E Cooper 36 - sister-in-law of John
George Cooper 4 - nephew of John

Since both the Bullimore heads of household were John, they weren't brothers. ;)

Sorry I have taken so long in getting back on the site. it has been a combination of work, family and weekends away.

Are you still here Vivienne and Janey?

I am now in possession of the Annie Bullimore marriage to Follan Smith (1947) and it looks like you were right again!
This is what it has revealed:
Annie Bullimore was a WIDOW!
She was 52 years old when she married again
She was a Hotel Manageress at that time
Her father was called Alfred Smith and I wonder if he was still alive at the time of her marriage as it doesn't say he was deceased like the groom's father.
Do you think my Grandmother (Dorothy) was a war child? And from this information is it possible to trace her father's side (Coopers) who she was raised by?

Have we done this??

Marriages Mar 1914
> BULLIMORE Ernest Smith Ecclesall B. 9c 483
Earnshaw Martha Elshaw Ecclesall B. 9c 483
ELSHAW William Earnshaw Ecclesall B 9c 483
> Smith Annie E Bullimore Ecclesall B. 9c 483

Edit - yes - I did it on page 1. ;)

No death for Ernest at the CWGC site.

You have to make do with me this week. Viv is off frollicking on the emerald isle.

Tentative 1911:

SMITH ANNIE ELIZA 1895 16 Ecclesall Bierlow

SMITH ANNIE ROSE 1872 39 Ecclesall Bierlow
> SMITH ALFRED 1874 37 Ecclesall Bierlow
SMITH CHARLES WALTER 1897 14 Ecclesall Bierlow
SMITH HENRY 1901 10 Ecclesall Bierlow
SMITH ALFRED EDWARD 1906 5 Ecclesall Bierlow
SMITH MARY HANNAH 1908 3 Ecclesall Bierlow
SMITH GERTRUDE BUTTLEBANK 1910 11 MONTHS Ecclesall Bierlow

She was 52 in 1947 = born c1895.

Witness names on the marriage certificate?
Any occupation for father?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Oct 2009 13:12

My bet for Ernest in 1901:

Name: Ernest Bullimore
Age: 10
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1891
Relation: Son
Father's Name: John
Mother's Name: Maltide
Where born: Holy Island, Northamptonshire, England

Civil parish: York

John Bullimore 44 - born Yarmouth, Norfolk - Sergeant Royal Artillery
Maltide Bullimore 44 -- born Bangalore
Charles E Bullimore 16 -- born Bangalore
Florence Bullimore 14
Maud Bullimore 11
Ernest Bullimore 10
Violet Bullimore 7
May Bullimore 4

The only other one of a rightish age, 1895, with no middle initial, is in Lincolnshire.

The household in 1891:

John Bullimore 34
Matilda Bullimore 33
Charles E Bullimore 6
Florence G Bullimore 4
Maud Bullimore 2
> __ Bullimore 1/12 (Ernest)

Civil parish: Holy Island
Registration district: Berwick

Births Jun 1891
Bullimore Ernest Berwick 10b 459

>>> He is in someone's tree here at GR:

Ernest 1891 Holy Island,Northumberland

I can't spot him in 1911. Given that the family was military, he may have been in the military himself at that point.

I know this isn't finding the Coopers, but it's placing us in time and space, and it's possible that a Bullimore family member will know what became of Ernest, e.g. if he was in WWI, etc.

Karen Report 29 Oct 2009 15:44

Thanks Janey for all your research. Where is Ecclesall Bierlow?
On the marriage certificate Annie's father was a Steel Roller.
The witnesses were E.A. Milner and E Hilton.
Did Annie have children to Ernest? if she did my Grandmother was never told.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Oct 2009 16:26

Are we both foreigners here? ;)

Ecclesall whatsit is a registration district in Yorkshire somewhere. Beyond that -- find the Bullimore-Smith marriage at FreeBMD and click on the district name to see what locations are in the district.

You know you have to order that marriage cert now, right?!

I don't subscribe for 1911 -- Viv does, but she's useless at the moment -- but I searched for Alfred Smith, occupation "steel", living with Annie Eliza Smith, and got:

SMITH ALFRED 1874 37 Ecclesall Bierlow Yorkshire West Riding

so indeed, the 1911 household I posted above is the right one, and that's your Annie Eliza Smith Bullimore Smith, barring some outlandish coincidence.

She was there in 1911, married there in 1914 to Ernest Bullimore, and had daughter Dorothy in York in 1914.

There are several other Bullimore-Smith births -- you do know how to do this at FreeBMD, right? Just search for births with surname Bullimore and mother Smith.

None of them is in the York area, however, and there are numerous other Bullimore-Smith marriages after 1900, and specifically marriages in Staines, Grimsby and Bourne, to account for them.

So - are you going to contact the tree owner with Dorothy's mother's husband Ernest Bullimore in her tree??

btw -- the sister Gertrude "Buttlebank":

Births Jun 1910
SMITH Gertrude Brittlebank Ecclesall B. 9c 410

Karen

Karen Report 29 Oct 2009 20:59

Yes I'll take a look on the free BMD and look into the tree. What I do find hard to believe is that if she had a daughter in 1914 and called her Dorothy why did she have my Grandmother 3 years later and call her the same name, that would be illegal wouldn't it?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Oct 2009 21:03

Eh? Oh dear, yes -- I got the wrong Dorothy there:

Births Jun 1917
Bullimore Dorothy M Bullimore York 9d 25

is yours, and I lighted on

Births Dec 1914
BULLIMORE Dorothy Smith York 9d 42

Huh. It could be complete coincidence, but I suspect this is the explanation:

Deaths Jun 1915
BULLIMORE Dorothy M age:0 Ecclesall Bierlow 9c 452

And now you have *another* certificate to get. We simply must have the 1914 Dorothy birth that I completely inadvertently threw into the mix here.

I suspect her mother then named the second child for the one who died in infancy.

Karen

Karen Report 29 Oct 2009 21:27

This is getting more mysterious by the minute. So I need to get the Ernest Bullimore and Annie Smith marriage certificate and the birth cert of the first Dorothy is that right?

No I'm not a foreigner, I'm born and bred in Yorkshire, but I didn't recognise the place - maybe it is a spelling variation!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Oct 2009 21:42

That's what I'd do - the Ernest + Annie marriage cert, and the 1914 Dorothy birth cert. If I felt like flinging money around. ;)

(Fortunately, I've pretty much finished my random flinging, having done a lot of it 3 or 4 years ago and got all what I needed -- it can definitely be worthwhile.)

But ---- are you going to contact the person who has Ernest Bullimore and all his siblings in her tree here at GR??

Caroljay

Caroljay Report 29 Oct 2009 21:49

Ecclesall Bierlow is Sheffield, fits in with the occupation of steel roller.

Karen

Karen Report 29 Oct 2009 22:03

I am as I speak looking for the person with the tree with Ernest Bullimore. So Ecclesall Bierlow is in Sheffield - I didn't know that.

Karen

Karen Report 29 Oct 2009 23:03

I've contacted the person who has Ernest Bullimore and siblings in her tree. I'll let you know the outcome
