And her middle name wasn't Sarah -- this birthdate is a little off, but surely there weren't that many Isabel Sadgrove-s around. Marriage cert will give father's name?

ISABEL ELIZA SADGROVE
Birth: 11 MAR 1834
Christening: 01 JUN 1834 Stockwell New Chapel Independent, Lambeth, Surrey, England
Father: WM. HARRY SADGROVE
Mother: JULIA CROLE HAMMOND
Batch No.: C097911

I have found the Isabels under Isabelle/isabella/isabel and isabell, but not under sarah before.
sadgroves I find under sadengren and all sorts, but she has always been some kind of isabel.

I have had more than one cert have a different name to the census, they weren't too careful with their transcribing. Even my nan's sister plain old florence gets all sorts of variations on each census.

I guess what I'm trying to say is "don't try and create another mystery"!! It is the right family, just one wrong name, and that happens all the time, ask evie beavie!!

Wrong one Janey.
Mothers name isabella.

1841 in Greenwich:

William Sadgrove 40
Julia Sadgrove 40
Julia Sadgrove 10
Isabel Sadgrove 5 (not born in county)
Harold Sadgrove 5
Alice Hammond 35

Names match up nicely -- Harold for brother, Hammond for grandmother, and sister Julia is in the same batch in the IGI.

What? How do you know mother's name is Isabella?

With a brother Harold and you think it isn't her?

Hmmmm.

Julias husband isnt a upholsterer, but isabelles is.
Thats my reasoning for isabelle as mum and not julia.

Linda

Linda Report 8 Jun 2009 00:09

can't find a birth for isabelle in 1837??

Oh yeah, and on the 1868 mc of isabel sadgrove and thomas james pullen isabels father is given as plain william,no harry for second name,no second name at all ,at all.
And being such "educated"" wealthy" people I would have thought it would have been given if he had one?

Snarky, snarky, now.

I still like Harold.

William & William Harry couldn't have been brothers.

So all Sadgroves named their children Isabel and Harold!

And then they called themselves Sarah and Mohammed on the censuses, just for a lark. ;)

now I will have to spend more hours and hours rechecking everything.
Bed here I come.

She's so easy to wind up.

Your upholderer / plain William / Isabella hypothesis makes perfect sense, of course.

Show us Isabel in 1841 when you get a chance?

Reading Sadgrove mistranscriptions is quite entertaining, if nothing else. I see a Sadfrong, too. I have a distant ancestor named Strongitharm. You should see what Ancestry has managed to do with that one. (The other person besides me who has corrected masses of them has a one-name study going and actually lives in Canada and shares my occupation! but we've never figured out any relationship.)
