Hoping.

I am dancing round the room in delight,I have kissed all and sundry that I can {including pooches} and asked for tham to be sent to Tas for your good self.

You really are a wonderful, fantastic, brilliant ,dedicated ,research person to go those extra few miles back into town to search again for me.

How to repay you?If you are ever over here {wales}there is a HUGE welcome sign on my gate for you and no expense will be spared on a slap up meal.
As long as its under a tenner!wine included of course.

Back to the nitty gritty now.
BURT you say was emma reeves mothers maiden name?
Samuels son born 1911 married a miss martin and her mothers surname was BURT, and they all came from, wait for it...

Wittersham in Kent, where Samuel was going, and retired to, when he came back from oz in 1932!!
Does that "help"verify things or does that verify things???
The way things get connected from all over the world is amazing.

Now to find John Harris going out to oz as you say.
And check for Emmas parents being freesettlers or convicts.
Oh Hoping you really have made my year.
Thank you so,so,sooooooooooooo much.

OK we have 2 marriage recordsJohn Harris and Emma married in 1866 (march 12th) john is aged 59 widower, and shoemaker and emma is aged 21, spinster. The witnesses are: what looks to be eliza and elizabeth Viner? M maxfield, and robert and william reeves and a harriet hasler, and john Wornersley. They married in St matthews church in New norfolk.

John reeves and millicent e burt also married in St mattheews, new norfolk in 1841 (aug 9th) and their details are John reeves aged 31, millicent aged 24. It looks as if it reads farming amn T.L. "Geo" Boadicea for john and Gilbert Henderon for millicent. Shall do a quick check for convicts on that one. Their witnesses are mary burt nad Richard Cordrau?? So shall check those out on the tas site as well. Regards Linda :)

Ho Ho Ho.
The irony of it.
Emma was the convicts daughter, and samuel her son married a very wealthy solicitors daughter!
Hot footing it to Tasbmd now.

Who am I looking for on shipping records again?
Millicent burt, john reeves and john harris shoemaker?

I recieved a birth cert for a burt {1868} from wittersham kent today, wonder if it might be the same family that millicent came from?
Thats for another day to look at though.

chrissiex Report 22 May 2009 14:18

Millicent got her free cert on 7 may 1852,but I cant read what she was transported for,the writing is really scrawley.
So daughter Emma was born while they were still convicts.

chrissiex Report 22 May 2009 17:05

There are STACKS of John Harris on the New South Wales, Australia, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1826-1922

If he is in that list then there is no image available for them.

So what do I ask for if I ask for a passage look up ??
I have searched all the poss sites on ancestry for him going out, where next?

Millicent was transported for larceny, along with (it looks like) her sister mary burt. So she''s single b 1817 and tried in Devon. John's record says single and then further along say's widower?

OK, back to the harris's. There are two marriages for a John Harris around 1830's and the most likely is to a mary groom in Hobart in 1832. This is the only one that appears to have produced offspring (although the records state mary unknown) so shall try and check those out next time I'm in town and if John is a shoemaker then I think we can take it that he's our man. Not that it'll give us any info as to his birthplace. But witnesses etc may help. I was lucky enough once to find a marriage that had taken place at the grooms parents home, and from that worked out that he was born in Yorkshire, fingers crossed. Linda :)

Thank you so much for all this extra info, hoping.
You really are worth your wieght in gold.
I will print it all off and sit and digest it in the morning as it is quite late here.

I thought that millicent burts record said larceny but wasnt certain,so its nice to have it confirmed.
Wonder what the 2 of them stole?
I presume that her and mary did it together as they were convicted and transported together.
But if they were sisters, which seems very likely,at least they had each other for support in such awful conditions, and all the fear of what they would find at the end of the voyage.
All I can say is that they were very strong women I would think.

Thank you for the extra info Lorraine,it is much appreciated.
The more the better.
I am finding all this totally fascinating.
But I was dreaming about being transported last night, which wasnt so good!
I must try to think of something else just before sleep.

I must say that I feel somewhat redudndant with you 2 so well on the case, but I know its in good hands.
thank you.

OK, john harris widower/shoemaker b 1810 married sarah east, widow aged 51 in new norfolk in 1861. Sarah then died of heart disease in 1865. No offpsring to them then, BUT. John died in 1893 and his death was reported by the supt of police. Death confirmed with shoemaker, john died of senile decay? None of the other marriages I checked had an occupation for john, so unable to verify that, and the two I was hoping for hav john as a convict (to mary groom in 1832), and bachelor to eliza mccreedy, also in 1832. So, no closer to finding out where john came from I'm afraid. I also couldn't find any births to john/eliza to match fathers occ, and the only ones to a possible mary, were a yeoman, corndealer and farmer. Drats!! Linda :)

Thank you Linda for that further info,my word you are a veritable "Tas devil" when it comes to Tas research.
There is but one thing now that I would really like to know and then I think that I will have the most filled out history that I can get on this lot, courtesy of you and Lorraine.

When did emma maria harris ,nee reeves, die?
Or have you already found that and I have missed it?
