The name is Lancelot Hannen (aka Lance). He died 24th August 1942 and he was the (retired) chairman of Christie's, so that should warrant a mention in the Times!

George John Brooks died on 13th June 1872, at 5 Richards Terrace, Albion Street, Rotherhithe. His death certificate states that he was age 39, Inspector of Thames Police. Cause of death natural suddenly. Information received from William Carter, Coroner for Surrey. Inquest held 18th June 1872.

Edward McDonald killed his wife Emily in 1954 in Hampstead, I think he was detained at HM Pleasure in Broadmoor in September 1954.

OH This sounds interesting. Please could you look up a marriage for William Henry Pickin to Maud Beatrice Gage in March 1919. Not sure there will be anything ,but trail is cold on William

He died 24th Dec 1951 and lived Kinnel Road Fulham.

Please could you look for a murder at Worth in Sussex, December l947. The man was named Constable and aged over 90, I believe he shot his wife and neighbour.

FORMER HEAD OF CHRISTIE'S AND CAMBRIDGE OAR

Mr L Hannen C.B.E, late senior partner in the firm of Christie Manson
and Woods, died at Mansfield Street, W yesterday

Born on Dec 10 1866, Lancelot Hannen was the third son of the late Mr
Benjamin Hannen of Pembridge Place, W. and Ouseleys, Wargrave, Berkshire,
and a nephew of Lord Hannen, a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary. He was educated
at Radley, where he was in the Eight 1884-85, and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge.
His early promise as oarsman was fulfilled at Cambridge. He was awarded
his rowing blue in 1888, when he rowed No 2 in the Cambridge crew which
beat Oxford by seven lengths, and he again rowed No 2 in 1889, Cambridge
winning in that year by two and three-quarter lengths. Hannen also rowed in his
college boat in 1886, 1887 and 1888, Trinity Hall being head of the river in each
of those years; and he was a memeber of the crews which won the Cambridge
University Fours 1886-87-88; the Grand at Henley, 1886-87; the Visitor' Fouts 1887; and the Steward' Fours 1888.
When he retired four years ago, Hannen had had nearly 50 years' association with
the famous art aution rooms. Two years later he returned to the sale room to conduct
the Red Cross sales as he did in the last war. During his half-century as an auctioneer
he disposed of many of the world's greatess masterpieces. He was made C.B.E in
1919.
In 1897 he married Delia Mary, daughter of the late Mr T R Dennis and had a son and
a daughter. His son Mr Gordon Hannen is now head of the firm of Christie, Manson
and Woods, and succeeded his father as picture auctioneer in 1935.

LIFE BAN ON MOTOR-LORRY DRIVER

A long list of previous convictions, including two for being drink in charge
of motor vehicles, was read at Romford Police Court yesterday, when LEWIS
WORTLEY, described as of Western Green, Five Elms, Dagenham, was charged
with being drunk in charge of a motor lorry. Witness stated that Wortley zig-zagged
down one road at Romford and twice mounted the footpath, and that he crashed
against trees in two other roads. Wortley said that he suffered from malaria and had
been taking quinine all day, but this did him no good. He then had two glasses of
ale to pull him round. He was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard
labour and was disqualified for holdling a motor driving licence for the remainder
of his life. The chairman (Mr J Z Cahill) said that Wortley was lucky not to have
killed someone.

MAN OF 95 CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER

Lying on the stretcher, William Constable 95 of Worth, Sussex, was brought
from Hellingly Mental Insititution to the East Grinstead magistrates court
yesterday on a charge of attempted murder of his wife and neighbour, Mrs
Ada Rye of Fir Cottage, Worth, on December 10. Inspector Simmonds in
evidence said that with Police sergeant Leeves he found Constable in a
wood holding a 12 bore shotgun. While the inspector kept the man in
conversation the police sergeant sprang on him from behind, took the
gun from him and unloaded it. When charged in court Constable said
"I had better be done away with. I did not nean to shoot her at all" He was
remanded in custody.
At the inquest on December 19 on Mrs Constable, who died on December
17 in Crawley hospital, a verdict was returned that she died from congestion
of the heart and acute bronchitis.
