Have you googled? ;)

http://www.nom-famille.com/nom-barassin.html

Données par département
Calvados (14) Barassin est le 3 017ème nom 58 pers.
Cher (18) Barassin est le 4 283ème nom 33 pers.
Yonne (89) Barassin est le 4 656ème nom 39 pers.
Essonne (91) Barassin est le 9 405ème nom 46 pers.
Paris (75) Barassin est le 21 991ème nom 62 pers.

(I'm assuming you read French.)

A grand total of fewer than 250 Barassins in France now. Which isn't the same total as the site gives:

En France : 171 personnes portent le nom de famille Barassin selon nos estimations

Quite a few of 'em on Facebook!

http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=+site:www.facebook.com+barassin

You never know -- there might be one who knows who his/her ancestors circa 1800 were.

So I am indeed useless (I've given up on trying to trick the IGI into disclosing some secret thing, too, try though I did). But I've just been sucking up. I have this little Jersey problem of my own ...

Seriously! I do! I have a gr-grfather's sister consistently shown in the censuses as born in Jersey 1843ish. The parents were born in Cornwall and Devon, the next children were born in Devon and Cornwall, there's no marriage for the parents anywhere, and the daughter was born in Jersey.

If they ever married. If she's their daughter (or the daughter of one of 'em maybe).

Their name is Hill. In Cornwall/Devon, that's worse than Smith.

A year ago I was contacted through Ancestry by the grx2 granddaughter of the daughter in question, who had seen my notes all over her ancestors in the censuses. Until then, she didn't know her grx2 gm was a Hill. She'd always been told she was a Miss Montmorency from France, and she'd returned to France before she died. Well, she already knew that part was a crock; she'd found her years before, a widowed day nursery matron in Tranmere, where she died just after the 1901.

It's a family of strange stories, and that's but one. But ... if you are ever wandering around any archives in the Channel Islands and happen upon the marriage or birth of any Hills ... or Montmorencys ... well ... ;) ;) ;)

Your edited opener, here for ref:

I HAVE NOW FOUND EVIDENCE THAT HE CHANGED HIS NAME, FATHER MAYBE JEAN FRANCOIS LE -BARBENCHON
and Helen De La tour /cour from cherbourg France.
So now i am seeking Auguste theodore Le Barbenchon born c 1820,any help would be welcome Please, Igi has been searched,Thankyou
> on the 1841 census guernsey the name is BARBENSBIER

Well, you know you have to tell us what this evidence is you have found, that he changed his name. ;)

So ... all the Barassin searching for nowt ...

BARBENSBIER -- not at Ancestry it isn't.

Here we are. BARBENSBIN. Sort of like "bargain bin". ;)

John Barbensbin 50 - Labourer
Helen Barbensbin 35
Auguste Barbensbin 20 - Tinker?
Marie Barbensbin 15
Francis Barbensbin 15 - Boatm__
Pierre Barbensbin 10 - ditto
Eugene Barbensbin 10
Victorie Barbensbin 2 (looks more like Victoire)
Adelle Barbensbin 1
Michael Anne 10 - Boatm__

All born foreign parts but the two little ones.

I would read it as Barbensh__ maybe (les maudits anglais and their phonetic spelling).

There are BARBENSONs in Alderney and Jersey in 1841. I wonder whether they could be anglicized Barbenchons? The name is extremely rare outside the Channel Islands (e.g. about 2 dozen entries total at FreeBMD).

Interestingly, in 1851:

(Not yours, I know; he was Barassin and with wife Désiré):

Name: Auguste Barbenson
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1821
Relation: Head
Where born: France
Civil Parish or Township: St Peter Port
Town: St Peter Port
County/Island: Guernsey
