Rodney Report 13 Sep 2008 20:18

Janice you are a star many thanks my father will be so pleased he never knew his grandparents or even where they came from. He will be so happy.

jansmith

jansmith Report 13 Sep 2008 20:19

Ellens maiden name was Berryman
Bawden census could be Williams mothers maiden name if 1881 census is correct. A birth cert will give mothers maiden names

Rodney

Rodney Report 13 Sep 2008 20:22

looking for a marriage
you could also try searching on

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com
you don't need all names to use the site

jansmith Report 13 Sep 2008 20:35

you have to have an open mind to some of the transcriptions and the enumarator perhaps did not know how to spell the name and some people could not read/write and so would not know if it was wrong!
I have an "a" in my surname sometimes translated or written as an"o"
Thats why if you want to be certain then you may need to send for some certs. A marriage should give bride/grooms fathers names and sometimes witnesses are family.
A birth will give mothers maiden name and fathers name (when known)

Selena in South East London

Selena in South East London Report 13 Sep 2008 20:39

Mistranscriptions are very common.

The surname Roden in my tree is mistranscribed as Kaden and Rochen (poor handwriting I think)

Bateman is mistranscribed as Baleman, Poole as Cool! They were hard to find.

Selena in South East London

Selena in South East London Report 13 Sep 2008 20:53

Have you googled the origin of the name?

Perhaps he was a sailor and not around in census years . Can anyone find any of the family posted in 1881 in 1891 or 1871? I have not been able to

Rodney

Rodney Report 13 Sep 2008 21:32

my father has often thought there might be naval connections

Rodney

Rodney Report 13 Sep 2008 21:47

might it be worth trying to contact the danish navy perhaps

jansmith

jansmith Report 13 Sep 2008 22:00

IF you get Williams birth cert i think it should have fathers occupation. I know the marriage cert should have so i would send for that before trying the navy
